Condensation in bedroom help please!

Please does anyone know how to tackle condensation? It's on the windows and the internal wall next to the window wall, I am wiping both daily/ a few times a day but I am not sure what to do to avoid it (and mould growing).

Any tips or help would be appreciated.

To add incase I get comments about being stupid for not knowing or googling:

I didn't have this problem at my last flat, i have only lived here a month.

I grew up in a mouldy damp home and no one ever explained how to avoid it.

I find google conflicting, do I need to open windows or increase heat for example?

Open your windows for at least 30 mins a day

get a dehumidifier

turn the heating up to at least 18’ for at least a couple of hours a day

Are you opening the windows?

Ventilation is key. Even if you only do it for 10 minutes when you get up it'll be better than not.

Are you drying clothes inside?

Keep window open at night.....thats when presumably you in there most and breathing, causing condensation

I'm definitely not opening windows as often as I should so that's great thank you! I am opening them but not daily.

I only use the tumble dryer for drying clothes, but the bedroom is next to the bathroom, there is an extractor? Fan in there that runs continuously and I keep the window open before/after baths and showers.

I work in property and have to advise a lot of people about damp and condensation. This is a video that I found that is incredibly useful.

I realise this is a stupid question but if I open the windows and shut the door will that be enough circulation of air? We are pretty high up and I have a very silly cat I am worried about her falling/jumping out. I will invest in some flat cats window covers and a dehumidifier after Xmas, I just don't have the money spare right now.

Open windows as others have said, even if you aren’t drying clothes in the room every breath you exhale adds moisture to the room. I usually have my bedroom windows open a crack all night, when I close them, like on the last few nights when it was too cold even for me , I really notice the window condensation in the morning so make sure I air the room thoroughly during the day.

I also have my door closed because I don’t let my cat in the bedroom, air circulates fine.

Thermal wall insulation might also help, the type bought as a roll and stuck to wall under wallpaper, obviously a longer term solution.

Get a dehumidifier. They’re great.

I open my windows in the morning for about 30 mins to an hour

I also wipe the condensation off of the windows with a chamois leather

Heating on at 18 degrees for a few hours each day

I use a mildly bleachy cloth to wipe the window sills weekly to prevent the black mold that may appear (minuscule amounts)

I haven't bothered trying to explain relative humidity on the many threads about damp, but he leaps straight in with it.

In a nutshell, the warmer the air, the more moisture it can hold.

@mistletoadandwine , this may sound daft to ask, but if you have modern windows have you checked whether they have a "night vent" setting, where you can secure the latch but the window remains open a crack?

They look like the pic. There's a choice of slot for the locking bolt - fully closed or vent.

It took me an embarrassingly long time to realise my windows had this...

We had exactly your problem and solved it. Also bathroom next to bedroom.
Open the window for 20 mins after you get up. We bought a small quiet dehumidifier ( silent night does one) that we could leave on over night and placed it in the coldest corner.
The issue was two people breathing at night.
wipe away any mould spores asap and wipe with a bleach / anti mould spray. .

try and avoid drying washing in the house. I have a dehumidifier in the laundry room too.

I used to get this badly in one of the bedrooms. I read a tip on here to try salt and it works.

I have two shallow bowls of salt on either side of the window sill. It works really well. I dry the bowls of salt out in the airing cupboard during the day.

B and Q sell small dehumidifiers with a replaceable cartridge for £7.50. Each cartridge is meant to last three months and so far it's working a treat in our house. We also keep mould/ mildew spray in the rooms affected and wipe it down 2-3 times a week to keep it at bay

Get a window vac

If you are using a dehumidifier keep the windows shut or it will just draw damp air in from outside

If your stat is set at say 20 and the temp outside is say 10 and you leave a window open your c/heating will NEVER be able to heat your room, it will never switch off!
