Cyprus or Lanzarote for holiday?

Booking our holiday for next year.
Found 10 nights at either destination for under £1,200 all inclusive each.
We think it's a really good deal
Where would you pick?
Cyprus hotel is in protaras and lanzarote is Puerto Del Carmen
We are both 37 and will be with no kids.

I love Cyprus and the beach at Protaras is stunning. The resort is a bit "brits abroad", pubs showing the football, cafes offering full English breakfast, even Starbucks and Mcdonalds. But I guess you get that in a lot of large resorts.

I personally wouldn't touch any Tsokkos owned/run hotel with a barge pole. They are crooked as hell, don't get the correct licenses, cut corners everywhere - that's partly why they can be cheaper than other hotels. If you have enjoyed lots of 4* holidays, I think you'll be disappointed - they tend to be style over substance.

I love Lanzarote. Love the food, Manrique, the beaches, sea, exploring etc.

Puerto del carmen in high season is a bit Blackpool with the heat but if you're going out and about, Lanzarote has a lot to offer.

Lanzarote is deliberately underdeveloped. It is a huge contrast to Tenerife, which is intended for the party and clubbing crowd. Lanzarote is much more about art, nature and history. So it very much depends what you prefer.

I've not been to Cyprus but stayed in Lanzarote several times.
September tends to get very hot and it's more popular with the Spanish then.
Last time I stayed in Matagorda which has an amazing beach.
The next beach along, Playa Pocillos is lovely too.
We always hire a car.
I recommend visiting the nature reserve beaches near Playa Blanca (Pozo & Papagoyo); the beautiful unspoiled lagoon at Caleton Blanco; the volcanoes, Teguise (the old town in the hills not the resort Costa Teguise), the Caesar Manrique house & museum; Omar Sharifs old villa, the Cactus Garden, the caves etc. also the Marina of Playa Caleta is nice for food & has a market.

I'd like to try Cyprus but my local airport only flies to Paphos.. are there any sandy beaches??

The nicest beaches are in Ayia Napa & Protaras not in Paphos

SommerTen · 10/12/2022 21:53

Yes I have heard the better beaches are more that way.

RovenderKitt · 10/12/2022 21:59

Cyprus. Every time.

ChaseTheSun · 10/12/2022 22:16

Been to both areas and they are both lovely but out of the 2, we would choose Cyprus every time. Flights tend to be very expensive though.

Livinginanotherworld · 10/12/2022 22:19

There is a reason it’s called Lanzagrotty. Cyprus every time.

It couldn’t be less grotty. It’s stunning. Maybe a bit dull for some but a real hidden gem. The architecture, food, galleries, volcanoes, vineyards, strict planning so no high rises, spotless, no traffic,

Overthebow · 10/12/2022 23:15

Lanzarote is lovely but you’ve got to enjoy nature and quieter holidays to appreciate it really. If you prefer bars, English food and British resorts it’s not really for you.

I prefer the paphos side of the island, protaras lacks any character. Having a Mac Donald’s at the end of the street isn’t usually a plus point. There are plenty of lovely beaches to be found all over Cyprus

dogrilla · 11/12/2022 19:34

The trouble with Lanzarote is it looks like a builders yard. Landscape is just rubble so isn't beautiful unless you're after a surface-of-the-moon vibe. Hotels are nice enough and weather generally ok though. Cypress a bit more lush and verdant.

underneaththeash · 11/12/2022 20:10

Not keen on lanzarote. Cyprus has much more to see. But obviously depends on your hotel.
