Someone signed for my parcel, but who?

Ordered something from john lewis, received email this morning saying it had been delivered at 10:40am. I was here, no distractions, nobody called.

Carrier is royal mail, I am presuming this is not strike related.

Knocked in a few neighbour's doors, either no one home or they had no idea. So I checked the tracking email sent by royal mail and noticed they'd supplied a scan of 'my' signature in the electronic box, so the item is classed as delivered.

I called JL and they were very helpful, verified my door number and they are investigating it. Fine. But what the heck happened? Anyone else experienced this?

Why would the postie take it to another house and accept the signature of someone who wasn't me, nor shared the same door number? And more to the point, why would the recipient 'fake' my name?

Down here the posties sign on your behalf now, since covid. It's annoying really because always looks like you've signed when you haven't

Wronglane · 09/12/2022 15:17

Royal Mail are on strike today so not delivering. I had this - the postie had just scribbled a signature and not delivered it. Got a refund

Hopemax · 09/12/2022 15:18

Check your bins/recycling/shed/garden etc. just in case it's been left. Happened to me before.

SnowyPheasants · 09/12/2022 15:24

Thank you.
They can't get around the back and nothing at front.
It certainly isn't sitting anywhere, I am worried someone took it in, if it was delivered at all. I am surprised also that JL didn't tell me if there was a strike today. Nothing makes sense. If they are striking today who or what sent the email with my signature on it?

Isn't faking a signature fraud?

JLewis lady told me i cant have a refund as it is classed as delivered. She checked with the mailing dept, who confirmed it had been delievered....im sure they would have told her if there were no deliveries today, i am so confused.

Thanks for the info. I have no idea what to do. If they just signed it for me and didnt deliver, where would the parcel go? Sorting office?

Have you looked in your bins or in the back garden, asked a neighbour.

Otherwise try and catch your postman tomorrow and see if he can get any information for you.

I don't know if you can track it on the Royal mail website and it will tell you where it is.

SlipperyLizard · 09/12/2022 16:32

My mum had this, Royal Mail sent her a picture of a picture of a doorway that wasn’t ours or our neighbours when telling her something had been delivered.

Royal Mail should be able to give you the location (using GPS) it was delivered to if you contact them, they did for my mum but by then my husband had found the doorway (a few streets away!).

StrikeandRobin · 09/12/2022 16:35

There’s a link on the rm site if an up item has been marked as delivered but you don’t have it.

www.royalmail.com/help/item-shown-as-delivered-but-has-not-been

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 09/12/2022 16:38

We have had similar. The tracking information showed a photo and GPS trace of the parcel "delivered" to a front garden two streets away. When we called round the parcel wasn't there and no-one answered the door. DH collared the postie who feigned ignorance and then turned up with it a couple of hours later.

Because we had this evidence the seller was in the process of replacing the item when the parcel was eventually delivered. I don't know what you can do with a fake signature.

notprincehamlet · 09/12/2022 16:47

I had this. The parcel hadn't been delivered - the postman had tried to deliver it to the house next door and when he didn't get a reply he put a 'tried to deliver while you were out' card through their door. Meanwhile I got a 'parcel delivered' email. Took a bit of sleuthing to track it down. Maybe try contacting your local sorting office to see if they have it?

Notanotherone6 · 09/12/2022 17:01

Last one that I had that showed delivered and signed for was some random signature, signed for by 'Porch'. I can only assume the postman had dumped it on someone's doorstep and signed for it themselves. Got my money back easily because it was showing as delivered by a team around 50 miles away from me.

It's incredibly irritating when your signature gets faked.

SnowyPheasants · 09/12/2022 17:17

Thanks for the replies:)

I noticed a map on my tracker claiming to have delivered it to my street (not the house number, just a map with a pin in it in the road.
I did a bit of googling, seems either john lewis will deal with it, or I can ask at sorting office. It is unlikely it was delivered at all. There are no spaces at the front of the house, no bins, etc, just a busy road.

Also noticed a reddit thread today with lots of reports of same issue recently, but with Evri! Seems we can't win.

It’s not up to you to go tracking it down. It’s up to JL to deliver it. Mine was showing as tracked and delivered to my house but it wasn’t and the signature wasn’t mine. Unless there’s hard evidence you got it put in your hand (photo) then JL are talking rubbish and they need to replace the item and pick up the issue with Royal Mail themselves. Be firm

Yes, I am waiting for them to try to locate it. I will definitely demand compensation or that they resend the items. Thanks:)
