I have agreed to do some ad hoc babysitting for a couple who live nearby. One child aged 2 yrs. I am a primary School teacher in my fifties. They are a well off couple in their 40's.(Not sure last 2 sentences are relevant but putting it in anyway). They have asked me what I want to be paid. What hourly rate should I suggest? Any suggestions? In pounds please.

£10 an hour and you get to use their heating and drinks.

More if the child is likely to be awake

Well that goes without saying surely.

why don’t you also add “and use the toilet”

Well these days some people are being tight with their heating!

Depends on your location as to what the going rate is where you are. I pay £14 per hour in London (kids already in bed).

It doesn't. These days some people are being so tight with their heating and not having it on.

Managinggenzoclock · 08/12/2022 07:19

We pay £10,50 per hour in London through an agency and they are all experienced/qualified adults.

Ciri · 08/12/2022 07:21

Minimum wage has increased so people need to expect to pay a bit more now

alasangne · 08/12/2022 07:28

Oh yeah minimum wage is currently 9.50 rising to 10.42 so £12 sounds about right.

Yes but their child will be present

PingPongMerrilyWithPie · 08/12/2022 09:31

oh my, this reminds me of the time we had a babysitter in and forgot to boost the heating. Poor love was freezing. It wasn't at all intentional, just a stupid mistake, but she must have thought we were awful!

Our child was nice and toasty under their duvet however.
