FB and WhatsApp settings to not see/ hear people but not let them know

I am a bit technophobic, so need a bit of help.

I use FB a tiny bit e.g. selling things, and being in local groups. However, whenever I open it, it is full of feed from adverts and from people I hardly know but had to accept out of courtesy, and it is annoying. Also, if I ever put something up, they comment, and I don't even know them or care for their opinion.

Same with Whatsapp. There are a couple of groups I need to be in for hobbies and sometimes I open it up after work and I have 50 updates, mostly nonsense, and I don't want to wade through them.

One of my NYR's is to reduce the amount of spam I have in my life, and radio interference. I have little time for myself and I need to cut out non essential things like responding to MIL threads on MN|

Forgot to say, I don't want the person to know I have turned them off.

You could turn off your notifications in your phone settings so you don’t get told every time.

I think Facebook has settings to turn off notifications - look in the settings menu.

On WhatsApp you can mute conversations - swipe the conversation to the left, tap on the three dots, then mute.

No one will know and if you do all this your activity online will be driven by you and when you want to open the apps, not by when the apps ping you.

You can mute Whatsapp groups so you don't get notifications. Or just leave them. On Facebook you can mark people as close friends or acquaintances. If you do posts, mark them as close friends only , then the other people won't see them but also won't know you have posted. You can set it so you only see posts from close friends too. It still means you can see their profiles etc if you want to but cuts out a lot. I also just unfriend people every so often that I have no contact with.

With FB, click on each "friend" to go to their profile, click on the friends box just under their picture and press "unfollow". Presto, you won't see anything they post and they are none the wider.

In terms of people commenting whenever you post something to sell, I got so annoyed with this I actually made a second Facebook account with a fake surname just to post on selling groups!

Whatsapp- click on group setting then mute the group.
facebook- unfollow
