Are there likely to be blanket school closures?

A person I work with today said that she wouldn’t be surprised if the government made the decision to close all schools in the UK because of the Strep A outbreak.

Are we really at that point? When they closed in March 2020 they were closed for months so I really hope not!

No of course not.

Greengr · 06/12/2022 17:32
Hmm
Footballmyarse · 06/12/2022 17:33

No. I’d probably stake my house on that.

what a preposterous suggestion.

Iamclearlyamug · 06/12/2022 17:33

Absolutely won't happen

Nothingbuttheglory · 06/12/2022 17:34

Er, no.

I heard on the radio that there may be an adjustment to GPs guidance on the threshold for prescribing antibiotics.

The vast majority of people who get strep A are absolutely fine.

Baconand · 06/12/2022 17:35

Absolutely not. They might do very local
closes where there is a big outbreak in order to dose everyone up. But nothing else and even that’s extremely unlikely to happen.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 06/12/2022 17:35

Your friend sounds like she is hoping for some drama. How terribkento suggest depriving children of an education again.

Schools will close for 2 weeks soon anyway.

carefulcalculator · 06/12/2022 17:40

Not blanket no, they might close schools with an outbreak for a short period I suppose, as they do with a Norovirus outbreak.

asblindasabat · 06/12/2022 17:42

glad to hear. Obviously it’s awful and it’s so saddening to hear about all the people who have sadly passed away.

Work colleague in question does have a tendency to exaggerate and make things sound worse than what they are - back in February when Russia invaded Ukraine, she told us that we would likely be conscripted at some point!

I’d have laughed if they said that and moved on. I imagine there will be a lot of scaremongering going on with posts about it though.

justasking111 · 06/12/2022 17:51

Two little girls in our town have it. The press covered the story. The mum was very sensible saying just look out for symptoms. They both have the rash. The antibiotics are working.

My two had scarlet fever one really poorly GP came out to the house, they had antibiotics and were fine

Tiredalwaystired · 06/12/2022 17:53

There are outbreaks most years without any coverage in the press. It’s higher than usual for this time of year but about comparable with the last big flare up about five years ago. It didn’t even make the papers then.

absolutely right to be vigilant. No need to be histrionic.

JudithHarper · 06/12/2022 17:54

A stupid idea on a par with closing them for covid.

Hasn't anyone learned anything from that disaster?

dontgobaconmyheart · 06/12/2022 17:57

Saying you wouldn't be surprised isn't the same as saying she thinks that is going to happen. Either way she sounds either over anxious or as though she enjoys provoking drama for conversation purposes.

I can't imagine it happening personally but am no authority on the subject. You would hope there would be some sort of plan in place for localised outbreaks and I was reading earlier about a plan for rolling out antibiotics, so obviously there is concern there and rightly so after the very sad deaths of children who have succumbed unexpectedly, so very sad.

GiltEdges · 06/12/2022 17:59

Closing schools during lockdown is precisely why we’re in this situation in the first place. I’d like to think a lesson has been learned from that, but with the current government god only knows…

It would be stupid if anyone was considering it but of course they arent

The OPs friend is clearly a bit hard of thinking

asland · 06/12/2022 18:07

My 14mo had it a recently and was fine after antibiotics. She’s been worse off a regular cold so please remember LOTS of children have it and are fine.

Exactly, people are hysterical since covid. The press don't help though.

Stop taking her seriously then. You already no she’s full of it.

Well it sounds like she’s got a willing listener and gullible enough audience in you OP so I don’t imagine she’ll stop any time soon.

GreenWheat · 06/12/2022 18:14

Hopefully covid taught us that closing schools was an absolute disaster and is not a viable tool for disease control. Some people seem to think that because it was deployed in covid, it will be a common and acceptable occurrence. It won't be.

Mariposista · 06/12/2022 18:14

School closures and lockdowns are the very reason we are seeing such a severe outbreak in the first place. Those children should have been mixing and building their immune systems up two years ago.

Croftboft · 06/12/2022 18:17

No, you know she's pulling this shite out of her arse (her Russia comments), ignore any dramatic musings she makes.
