Want to book a pre christmas break with dd's age 9 & 11 next nov or dec.... Wishlist includes
-a theatre to see the Nutcracker 🎄
-lots for the girls to do, some educational things to see & do would be a bonus!
-an ice rink suitable for beginners skating
-lovely Christmas markets
-cosy hotel near the markets
-Dh will be coming too but this trip will be geared towards the kids. We all love Christmas!

Edinburgh!

Vienna is absolutely beautiful and quite reasonable.

Clean, friendly, excellent public transport.

More Christmas markets than you can shake a stick at...horse drawn carriage rides...mulled wine...Goulash...just stunning

Copenhagen!
Tivoli at Christmas is just as popular with Danes as tourists, it's a must!

Prague, but it has so much more than that, so keep an open mind.

The Edinburgh Christmas market this year is over two thirds food and drink stalls and one third retail so I wouldn’t recommend it. Very disappointing, it’s been so much better in previous years. It’s been spread out over different locations and there is the ice rink in George Street and there are some good retail stalls in Castle Street but it seems to be all about selling food.

Another vote for Vienna, stunningly beautiful city, lovely atmosphere, lots to see and do. All this, plus sachertorte!

Another vote for Vienna. I took dd at that age and it was great. Really easy to get around, very compact, lovely markets and things to see - they might love seeing the morning rehearsals at the Spanish Riding School, we did!

Stockholm!

Stockholm, staying in the centre.

  • The Nutcracker at the Royal Swedish Opera
  • Educational things: the royal palace, Skansen, the Vasa, the aquarium...
  • Ice skating at the King's Gardens
  • Christmas market also at Skansen. Go when it's dark and beautifully lit
  • The youth hotel on Skeppsholmen is perfectly placed to walk everywhere and is lovely too. Don't stay on the boat!

Brussels. You can go on the Eurostar, it's small, beautiful, good Christmas market, ice skating...

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 06/12/2022 12:57

I don't know what will be on at the theatre next winter, but York...

Cologne, accessible via Brussels and the high speed train.

Thanks so much everyone! These are great suggestions. My dd's say ice skating & the nutcracker are a must have on the wishlist... Dh & I will happily settle for copious amounts of mulled wine & a horse drawn carraige would be lovely!
