Today, my DS asked me how my day had been

I just want to share this with someone because I am so surprised and pleased.

DS is 9. He is currently under assessment for ASD. He has never in my memory started a conversation with me by asking about something unrelated to his needs / interests.

He is a wonderful, sweet, bright and funny child. He will mostly answer questions addressed to him (although sometimes just by saying no and leaving the room Hmm ) and will approach you to talk about his particular interests (mostly maths / coding and certain games) or if he needs something.

Today, he out of the blue asked me if I had enjoyed dinner and how my day had been. It actually took me a second to register the fact he was asking and to process how to answer.

I realise this might seem a bizzare thing to be so pleased by but social communication is such a challenge for him and it's just made my day really lovely.

If there is something small that has made your day lovely do share it so I can feel pleased on your behalf too!

That sounds lovely. I am happy for you

babysharksb1tch · 05/12/2022 19:32

My son is non verbal and autistic at 3. I am absolutely delighted for you and pray one day that will be us. What a brilliant Christmas present!

grapehyacinthisactuallyblue · 05/12/2022 19:34

Before reading pp's comment, exactly same thing came to my mind too. It's wonderful. How lovely!

I live with an 8 yo with no additional needs who, now you mention it, has never asked a question like that...

RockAndRollerskate · 05/12/2022 19:35

That’s filled me with the warm fuzzies - I’m so happy for you, how lovely 😊

PronounsBaby · 05/12/2022 19:35

Sorry, I didn't say how lovely it is for you, and hope one day to hear the same!

Techno56 · 05/12/2022 19:37

That is amazing. My son is autistic and not a bad bone in his body but I would fall off my chair if he asked me anything about my day or how I was.

Doggydarling · 05/12/2022 19:41

Said goodbye to my 10 year old nephew and his reply was 'bye, love you Auntie' I said 'love you too' and he gave me a big hug around my waist, I love this little guy and his sisters so much it was wonderful to have him say it to me.

RedemptionOrNothing · 05/12/2022 19:49

That’s so lovely. I’m chuffed for you.

My cat sung when he saw me today and gave me a big fuss. That is my small thing.

Mandatorymongoose · 05/12/2022 19:52

@babysharksb1tch thank you! I will keep my fingers crossed for you too. DS talked very late but he does talk plenty now when he wants to (just about computer games I still don't understand!)

@PronounsBaby they are all funny little creatures!

@Doggydarling that's so lovely! DS mostly just says OK if you tell him you love him so the rare occasions he says love you too are super special. It's such a lovely feeling.

@RedRedemptionOrNothing awww that's so sweet, my Ddog just shouts at me when I get home and thinks I'm very inconsiderate for not having pockets full of treats at all times

Aw bless, your heart must be bursting.

Mandatorymongoose · 05/12/2022 19:59

@techno56 I honestly nearly did, I was finishing off some work and it really threw me, I was just so baffled for a second

Lovely!

I’ve been off work ill today. When my 5yo got home from school, he wrote some little notes to me saying ‘I love you’, ‘I care for you’ and a picture of me. So cute. Made me feel slightly better!

SadButTheTruth · 05/12/2022 20:02

Im delighted for you OP, that’s just the loveliest of simple things that make you feel good! May it be the first of many questions!

@RedemptionOrNothing what did the cat sing?!

WalkingOnSonshine · 05/12/2022 20:02

That’s really made me smile.

KitchenFleur · 05/12/2022 20:05

You’ll remember this for a long time!

I remember ds asking this when he was 12 (he is autistic), dd and I just gaped at him we were so shocked 😂

SunshineIndoors123 · 05/12/2022 20:11

How lovely! I'm so happy for you that he asked you that. This evening, I was writing some thank you cards and my baby was on his playmat. I glanced down at him as he had gone a bit quiet (usually he's bashing his toys/madly kicking his legs) and he was just lying there smiling at me, a proper big beaming smile. Made my heart melt

RedemptionOrNothing · 05/12/2022 20:38

The cat was singing the song of his people he is very vocal @SadButTheTruth

Here he is singing a carol.

Today, my DS asked me how my day had been
MuggleMe · 05/12/2022 20:52

Yesterday I pulled my ASD DD up on some bad behaviour earlier in the day. She said I know mummy and I've been trying to make up for it all day (and I had).

MuggleMe · 05/12/2022 20:54

*had noticed.

RogueV · 05/12/2022 20:58

This has made me smile

AceofPentacles · 05/12/2022 21:03
