Car Sale but MOT error

I’m shortly selling my car, the 2nd MOT in September showed c19000 miles, and now the mileage is 19500, in keeping with my 400/500 miles per month. I’ve noticed that the MOT history shows that in September 2021, the mileage is mistakenly noted as 23500 miles. I didn’t notice at the time and out of time for garage to change it, plus I have no evidence of what the actual mileage was. The service book shows that my mileage is consistently around 5000 a year. I overlooked the service this year though so the last documented mileage outside of MOT certificate is around April 2021.

Is it ok to list it with an explanation of the descrepancy? If I’d “clocked” the mileage then surely it wouldn’t have been to reduce an already low mileage car by just 4500 miles!

Does anyone have any experience of this?

Go here

www.gov.uk/check-mot-history

And check what mileage is recorded. The paper version may be written incorrectly.

I'm surprised it allows a lower mileage to be entered, you can't with DSR.

Perhaps the garage has a job sheet with the correct mileage and you can clear it up with DVLA.

The gov record and the paper both have it recorded incorrectly. I’ve rang the garage but they have nothing else noted. I presume they got 2 mileages muddled.

It is odd that the database didn’t flag the descrepancy. A quick google shows it happens a lot though it seems.

You can try to explain it to potential buyers but it’d be a red flag for me. It’ll make it harder when they come to sell it on. I’d walk away unless the price was very tempting.

I thought it was impossible to 'clock' modern cars?

Theyvelasted · 05/12/2022 20:41

if you have the means to hook into the computer you apparently can @pigsducksandchickens ! I’ve spoken to someone who works at cazoo and he said they wouldn’t bat an eyelid at the discrepancy, given how low the mileage is
