Almost 13yo dd2 would like a fountain pen for her birthday later in the month...

Any recommendations?

I don't really want to spend a huge amount as she's quite hard on the, admittedly cheap, one she has at the mo. I'm just not sure what to buy 🤷‍♀️

I've looked at some on Amazon & read reviews, which I will continue to do tomorrow, but wondered if anyone might have any suggestions too.

Tia 🙂

Lamy safari - writes beautifully and under £20.

MrsHamlet · 04/12/2022 21:20

I second lamy safari. I use them every day at school - as do several of my students now!

toastofthetown · 04/12/2022 21:21

I also have a couple of Lamy Safaris, for different coloured inks.

Summer1986 · 04/12/2022 21:22

I also can't here to suggest a lamy, I have a couple with different nib thickness and different coloured ink

greenacrylicpaint · 04/12/2022 21:23

yes to lamy
especially now that school exams require a lot of writing.
you can get refillable ink thingies as well and pots of inks.

sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea · 04/12/2022 21:24

I bought an amazon basics one a few months ago for about £6. It writes like a dream, and it came in a jewellery type box that made me feel very special Grin It also takes all the normal sized cartridges, so I can still buy the fancy coloured ink if I'm feeling teenagery. Unexpected bonus - the case has two little slots for spare cartridges so I don't lose them at the bottom of my bag.

AdelaideRo · 04/12/2022 21:25

Also going to suggest a Lamy safari.

KindergartenKop · 04/12/2022 21:26

Parker jotter is good, it's small and light.

caringcarer · 04/12/2022 21:26

Waterman make wonderful fountain pens and do some love fountain and rollerball gift sets in gift boxes.

MrsHamlet · 04/12/2022 21:26

I also have a lovely Kaweco sport which currently has orange ink. I have refillable cartridges and pots of ink.

lucysmam · 04/12/2022 21:27

Lots of love for the Lamy Safari, I'll look for that, thank you very much!

@sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea I didn't know amazon had a basics range, I'll look for that one too. She does like things in gift boxes.

Another Lamy fan here. They write beautifully and come in so many colours. As do their ink cartridges.

MrsHamlet · 04/12/2022 21:35

I mark in Lamy vibrant pink. School rules say I have to mark in red. It's my tiny rebellion.

SoggyBananaLoaf · 04/12/2022 21:50

Came on to say Lamy! Indestructible (probably), had two over the past 20 years. Love them.

ChristmasJoysuckers · 04/12/2022 22:13

Op thanks for the thread, I've never heard of lamy. I'm intrigued!

ThanksAntsThants · 04/12/2022 22:17

I bought DS a Parker and had his name engraved on it, mainly so it was less attractive for other kids to pinch.

boatyardblues · 04/12/2022 22:21

Another fan of the Lamy Safari for an affordable option, Waterman if you are pushing the boat out.

RewildingAmbridge · 04/12/2022 22:25

I have two Lamy Nex and a Lamy Al-star different colours in each and they take long cartridges. Definitely a Lamy and a selection of coloured inks. I get a good deal from an eBay seller. It's my little bit of individuality working in the public sector 😁

barelyfunctional · 04/12/2022 22:27

Kaweco are great because they use standard ink cartridges that you can buy anywhere
