Please help me choose

I am in a privileged position to be able to choose between two jobs. Both have pro's and con's and so I just can't decide! Please could you give me your opinions?

Job 1 - pro's...great for career development, job will pay for the remainder of the qualification I have been working towards. Will allow me to make more money in the future. The qualification will allow me to be able to earn much more longer term. 4 days pw, 20 minutes from home. con's...Actual work is boring and gives me anxiety. I don't look forward to Mondays. Must work on location with no option to work from home. Will mean I have to be out of the house for most of the school hols (kids are young teens).

Job 2 - pro's...work really interesting. Job security and great pension. Really 'worthwhile' job, will feel like I'm giving back to society. Able to work from home in school hols. con's...full time, and involves travel. No long term career progression and will be difficult to finish my qualification at all. May be a bit lonely.

Head says job 1, heart says job 2. So lovely peeps of the internet.....which job would you choose?

Job 1, tough it out, finish qualification, then start looking for Job 3

notyourmam · 04/12/2022 20:41

As long as job 2 is financially fine for you, it's a no brainer to me to choose the work you want to do over the work that gives you anxiety. Enjoy your life. And no decision is final.

Job 2... while the children need you and also will keep you whith less stress which will affect your life and those around you..
Then when the children are more independent... you could find a different job... If not happy with where you are.

fancyacuppatea · 04/12/2022 20:50

Either...but you really need Job 3.
Good luck with whatever you choose.

Why does job 1 give you anxiety?

Lycanthropology · 04/12/2022 21:56

Job 2.

The deeper anxiety sets in, the worse it gets. It'll affect your sleep and ultimately your mental and physical health.
There's no point in doing a job that makes you miserable if you have other options.

underneaththeash · 04/12/2022 21:58

How long do you need to work in job 1 to get qualification?

Time40 · 04/12/2022 22:06

Job 1, tough it out, finish qualification, then start looking for Job 3

Seeing as Job 1 is only four days, I agree with the above. Why does it make you anxious?

Windinmyhair · 04/12/2022 22:08

I agree - see Job one as a necessary evil to get to job three with a finished
qualification.

As long as the qualification is still in something you want to do and you can find your dream job later down the line?

HappyKoala56 · 04/12/2022 22:58

Thanks everyone. To answer the questions, the qualification will take about 6 months to complete. My anxiety comes from knowledge about the office culture (mainly men, a lot of ego's), plus I have a bit of imposter syndrome, and I know the workload is really behind so it will have additional stress for months.

I’d go with your heart over your head… especially as Job 1 gives you anxiety as it’s likely to only get worse the more you progress- especially if you suffer with imposter syndrome. Good luck with whatever you choose x
