When to hand out party invitations?

Son's party on 28th January, whole class a few more. When should I send out invitations? Before they break up or after they go back?

I’m whatsapping an invite my lot this week. Don’t do paper invites.

ASAP I'd say. Best to give people as much notice as possible.

After they go back. They'll get lost in the Christmas holidays. You will have at least a fortnight after term starts at beginning of January.

Last year DC3 got a party invite in December for a party halfway through January.

It got mixed up in his bag with a bunch of Christmas cards from his classmates, and I didn’t realise it was a party invite rather than an unopened Christmas card until after the RSVP date.

It worked out for us in the end, but it’s possible you might have similar issues if you send the invites out in December.

Unfortunately I don't have any numbers so can't WhatsApp. I worry they'll all get lost with all the Christmas cards but they don't go back until the 10th January so that feels a bit late

I'd do it as soon as they go back. It's still over two weeks' notice. I think people will be even more likely than usual to forget to RSVP over Christmas.
