Can I get more antibiotics from a pharmacy?

DH took DS to the walk in centre this morning as he had an infected cut on his foot. They prescribed him antibiotics to be taken for the next 7 days but only had 2 days worth in stock (I believe there are some general supply issues atm). DH says they said we would need to call 111 or go to the GP tomorrow to get more antibiotics to see out the remainder of the course. This seems absurd to me as DS has been prescribed a 7 day course so why waste a GP appointment just to get more medicine when it's already been prescribed ? Would I have any luck going to a pharmacy with the bottle (which has a personalised label and has details of the amount required per day over 7 days) or do I definitely to make a new appointment/ go via 111? He definitely wasn't handed a paper prescription, just the bottle with dosage details printed out on the side.

I would ring your GP surgery on Monday and explain what happened. They should be able to give you a prescription for the remaining 5 days. A pharmacy won't be able to give you more tablets without a prescription.

The pharmacy should have given you an "IOU" for the rest. Go back to the walk in centre for the rest - I would expect them to have ordered them in. Or they should have given you a prescription for the remaining 5 days. If that's no good phone 111 & they may be able to get someone local to issue you with a prescription. Otherwise call the GP on Monday morning.

Who dispensed the antibiotics ?, if the pharmacy is short then they will give you what they have and then 'owe' you the rest, but you have to go back to that pharmacy, you cant collect the balance from a difference one.

Thanks - it was a nurse practitioner, apparently he went off to get them from the on-site pharmacy, handed them over and said it was only 2 days worth as that was all they had and we would need to call 111/ go to GP for more. I will go back to the walk in tomorrow morning and if no joy will call 111. Do not want to be scrabbling around trying to get a GP appointment on Monday morning and then trying to find a pharmacy with the right meds in stock! Just seems really illogical. But thanks for advice.

How odd, I've had numerous 'IOU's' from chemists when they can fulfil the full quantity. No way would I be going to another appointment, nor do I think your GP would prescribe more

This is so bizarre OP, the nurse practitioner at the walk in should have given you a script for the whole course. Unfortunately the Pharmacy won't be able to give you more as they won't have the prescription, and can't take your word for it that you need a further 5 day supply 🙈

Phone 111 and ask them to email the pharmacy a script for the remainder of the course.
