Warning quite dull - lottery tickets

I've just bought a lottery ticket online and noticed that there is a disclaimer stating you have to be a UK resident to buy your ticket online. Which is fine for me but...

How would they know if you weren't? What if you won but lived in Ireland, or France. How would the lottery actually know? Do they cross check the electoral role or something similar?

IP address if purchasing abroad - we’ve had something (not lottery) refused when we tried to do it on our account from abroad but got some one here to log into our account and they were able to complete the transaction for us!
