Even the Guardian is concerned with 'outing hobbies' For the sake of this question let’s call this hobby, hypothetically, motorcycling.

www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2022/dec/02/my-wife-says-pursuing-my-hobby-will-end-our-marriage-lets-call-it-hypothetically-motorcycling?

I’m towards the latter stages of my career and have also raised a large family over the last 25 years with my wife. I don’t have or find much else of interest outside work and my immediate family, but I’ve been increasingly keen to take up a hobby that I used to have before I got married. For the sake of this question let’s call this hobby, hypothetically, motorcycling.

Is the thread to be about the reason someone doesn't want a hobby outed, or the fact the wife has asked him to choose?

It's very weird to think that a hobby is outing, like you're so unique that no one else does it. I knit socks, oh my god, now the whole world knows who I am 😂
I kind of wish Eleanor had said, bloody hell mate just say what it is, you want to buy a motorbike not become Batman.

Irrelevant

He is asking about an issue and has a hobby which is so unique to say what it is would out him

Interesting suggestion further down the thread, that this hobby might be collecting Nazi memorabilia!

"This letter is very similar to one published in another periodical recently. In that case the hobby was - err - collecting memorabilia from a certain historical era. For some reason both the wife and the columnist objected strongly. I suspect this is a version of the same letter written strictly with an eye to publication and edited appropriately for the taste of readers of each."
