Monica's kitchen (In Friends)

I've been watching friends recently and looking at Monica's kitchen in scenes. For someone who's such a neat freak and organised, her kitchen looks so cluttered and messy! I think it's the cupboards as they have no doors, and the counter top all cluttered.

When she cooks their thanksgiving/Christmas meals there's literally no room to do anything, let alone a big meal for 6! And where is all the washing up that a big meal would create?

I think it's of its time. I don't think the trend then was for clean lines, sleek worktops and everything shiny and white. It's a bit more characterful. And I'm sure Monica knows exactly where everything is and everything goes!

The apartment is open plan so there isn't the room for big kitchen .

I remember reading something, probably here on MN, that the set had been designed and built before they knew Monica was a neat freak, and if they'd known it would have been designed differently. It always bugged me too that her kitchen looked such a mess.

I have watched (and rewatched) (and rewatched) friends from the beginning. And this has honestly never occurred to me until now. 🤦🏻‍♀️🤣 I always thought when watching the original episodes as they aired, how on trend the open kitchen was as it was such a contrast to a stuffy parents type kitchen. Over the years as I’ve rewatched, it has slightly stressed me out as I’ve since thought how I’d dislike such a messy open view kitchen. But never made the link between neat freak and mess 🤣 plenty of other inconsistencies have annoyed me however….
