Do I need to include covering letter with CV?

Applying for a second job to supplement childcare costs 🙄. It's a bank role in children's care which is unrelated to current job (financial services) but starting a nursing degree next year so will be relevant to that and I will be able to continue alongside my studies to keep our free nursery hours and tax free childcare. The application says 'apply via cv' with a link for a single file and no mention of a covering letter. My CV alone will make it look like a very random choice of role, would it be an issue to include a covering letter in the same file to explain why I'm applying?!

Yes put a covering letter in. It answers the question that you know they're going to pick up on.

Don't add a covering letter, they haven't asked for one so it could well be ignored.

Better to explain your planned career change in the personal statement/career summary at the top of your CV.
