Can anyone tell me what Hulme is like?

DS is thinking of applying to Manchester Metropolitan university.
Course looks good etc.
However, he's been told that the area it's in (Hulme) is grotty and dangerous. Is this true? I've read that it had a bad reputation years ago, but that it's seen considerable investment in recent years.
Is anyone familiar with the area? thank you

During the day around the university is totally fine. There is a difference between the ‘Hulme close to the uni’ and the housing estates.

it’s not the best area, but there are lots of students there. Ideally live somewhere else but attending the uni wouldn’t be something I’d be worried about.

Not somewhere I'd choose to live, I've worked on sites in and around Hulme and didn't feel safe walking around unaccompanied, especially after dark
