1. Why do cats prefer cardboard boxes (usually very small) to proper comfy cat beds ?

1. Why do some people seated inside cafes and coffee shops ask for their hot beverage in a take-out cup ?

I don't know. Answers on a postcard.

1. Doh, because they’re cats. Do not question their motives.
2. Because I want to have a sit down but also I realise I may not have time to finish the coffee and will want to take it with me when I go

For 2 I used to do this when the kids were tiny, both to reduce the chance of them spilling it, and to give me the option of taking it with me if they got bored.

Because cats are awkward fuckers. The amount of money I've spent on cat toys only for them to ignore the toy and play with the wrapping.

And do they? I guess because it keeps it hot for longer?

1 Do not try to ponder the imponderable.

2 I do this if I want a latte and they serve them in those ridiculous glass mugs with the handle at the bottom. Or, since I’m a slow drinker and know that I’ve got a few mins to sit down before having to leave and will want to take it with me.

2 Sometimes the washing up in cafes leaves a bit to be desired!

1. I detest those massive heavy cups in Costa that don't sit in the middle of the saucer. They hurt my wrist and look weird off centre. I always request a takeaway cup or bring my own.

You are asking a question about why cats do something?

2. Because if I'm in there for a long time (working), my drink will stay warmer for longer

1. Because they feel safer in a box? We once had a little furry igloo cat bed and the cat LOVED it. It was always prioritised over boxes - same sense of being enclosed I suppose.
2. I hate take out cups so always ask for a mug - since covid I find a lot of cafes go to a take out cup as a baseline.

Thankyou all. I must have forgotten that, by and large, cats will take every opportunity to defy logic, expectation and common sense. As for the take-out cups, all those explanations are plausible. I think Costa should adopt mugs like Caffe Nero use but keep the saucers. It will never happen, I fear, because of cost.

2.because I have dyspraxia and lots of places have cups that have tiny handles I cannot hold properly. Most places when I ask to look at the cups will then offer me a takeaway one if they have it it is nice of them

I've just remembered when we got our puppy, we had two cats already. We put puppy in a cardboard box for the journey home and he promptly fell asleep, belly up. When we got home we carried him in, still fast asleep, and put the box on the floor.

One of the cats when 'OOOH A CARDBOARD BOX', ran straight over and was about to jump inside and stopped, balanced on her hind legs, looking horrified, just hanging there for ages

To avoid the risk of a glass if I'm having a latte. Coffee in a glass is an abomination. Or
The cups/mugs are weird or horrible or so shallow that the drink is cold after one sip. Or
In case I want to leave before I've finished it. Or
As today my hands are really cold and I think they'll warm up quicker round a tall cardboard cup than a thick shallow cup.
