Airing the house when on a main road - pollution

I know everyone's emphasizing airing your house every day and keeping windows open, but I live on a main road. I wonder about the damage that can be done from letting traffic fumes in, for example. Some schools have non-opening windows when they're onto main roads because they obviously don't think it's healthy.

Anyone else in this situation? Is there anyway to prevent traffic pollution coming in, like some kind of filter? Or maybe it's not that bad and I'm worrying over nothing?

Or maybe airing your house isn't that essential.
Open windows in back of house not the side facing road ?

If the traffic outside is moving the levels are unlikely to be harmful. It also depends on wind direction and strength etc. Your council may monitor it so you can assess the air quality. However on balance it is probably better to air than not.
