Black mould on corn on the cob - worried

WhatIFoundInTheFridge · 28/11/2022 19:50

I've just found a corn on the cob languishing at the back of my vegetable drawer in the fridge...it's just over a month old and has black mould all over it, along with a little pink mould.
Has this ever happened to anyone? I'm stressing about aflatoxin contamination... panicking that I've been eating stuff from the fridge for the last few weeks that is contaminated with dangerous, cancer causing mould spores. 😟
Does anyone know if aflatoxins can appear after harvest, in the fridge?

I can't settle any of your concerns as I've genuinely no idea 🤷🏻‍♀️

I'd have gone, 'urgh 🤢' and flung it in the bin, and forgot all about it.

LauderSyme · 28/11/2022 20:09

I have never heard of aflatoxin contamination! This has happened to me, finding gruesomely rotting food hiding in the fridge and I'm still here to tell the tale! There are so many carcinogens in the world that panicking about this is probably OTT.

TellMeWhere · 28/11/2022 20:10

Just bin, give the drawer a wipe and move on. I've never heard of aflatoxin.

Empty the draw out of all the contents and bin them then wash the drawer out
Job done

Same! I've never even heard of that toxin.

So do you think this has happened to lots of people...finding veg in the fridge that's spoiled and has plenty of black mould all over it?

erm.. yes

TwoMonthsOff · 28/11/2022 20:28

More fridge management required 😭I’d clean the drawer out well and examine everything else, presumably other items are wrapped?

dementedpixie · 28/11/2022 20:28

I'd throw it away and clean out the drawer it was in and then I'd forget about it

mindutopia · 28/11/2022 20:28

Just bin it. I’m sure you’ll be fine. I’m embarrassed to admit our veg drawer often contains such specimens and it hasn’t killed us yet. Just give the fridge a good clean.

FannyFifer · 28/11/2022 20:28

I've found a mouldy bit of fruit or veg in my fridge at various times, just chucked it out & didn't think any more about it to be honest.

I mean I'm so careful what i buy with meal planning and I can't afford to waste food so it's not happened to me
My guess is it's been there quite some time.
I take my fridge veggie drawers out before I go food shopping and wash them weekly I thought that's what people did???

Nugg · 28/11/2022 20:30

I found a cucumber in my fridge today that was literally water, yellow water. Truly vile but all I did was throw it away very carefully and scrub the drawer out - you will be fine. I am sure please don't panic!

WhatIFoundInTheFridge · 28/11/2022 20:30

I have OCD, with 'contamination' fear being my particular 'speciality' 🙀 so telling a reasonable concern apart from a disproportionate worry is not my strong point!

dementedpixie · 28/11/2022 20:31

No I don't wash out my fridge drawers weekly tbh
I wash them if something has leaked or they have crumbs or other residue in them

dementedpixie · 28/11/2022 20:32

It's spring onions that die in our fridge drawer along with cucumber

amiold · 28/11/2022 20:33

Constantly binning mouldy crap (partner doesn't rotate shopping - drives me insane!). I just bin it and clean up/anti bac.

You won't die.

In other news - partner who doesn't rotate shopping had a steak for his lunch today because "it needed used"... it was five days past. Then he asked me to smell his Pitta bread at dinner "because it smells a bit funny". It's all immune building. You'll be fine

Fordian · 28/11/2022 20:34

Have you ever lived in a student house? 🤔😂

CherryRipe1 · 28/11/2022 20:35

The plastic wrap keeps all the cucumber mush in. Give your fridge drawer a wipe OP with detergent then bleach, rinse with very hot water and dry. Just check the biohazard hasn't contaminated anything else.

mathanxiety · 28/11/2022 20:36

Take everything out of the fridge.

Empty the contents of the veg drawer into the bin.

Wipe down your entire fridge with diluted bleach.

WhatIFoundInTheFridge · 28/11/2022 20:37

@Fordian haha! Yes, and in fact in that house, some 20 years ago, we had a jar that used to live in the hallway and that we'd sporadically add stuff to...just to see what fresh gruesomeness was created with each new addition!
I wasn't aware of aflatoxins back then. And I wish now that I was still blissfully ignorant.

Yep, have had black mould before and I didn't even consider contamination. As it was in a packet I doubt I wipes anything down afterwards. You will be fine.

Totally normal in this house. Don't worry about it.

Mine too, how the hell do you keep spring onions from drying out.

RaininSummer · 28/11/2022 20:43

Chuck it away, clean fridge where it was lurking and buy fresh veg. I had a liquified cucumber and a blackened swede last week and am still alive.
