AirPods for 12yo

I’m a bit of a Nanna when it comes to these things and my 12yo would like them for Christmas.

There seems to be a few versions with different shapes. Could I ask for your advice on which ones would be best for a smaller ear?

My biggest concern is that they’ll fall out and get lost!

@creamwitheverything Great! Thanks for your input. So the oldest generation ones should be fine for mine.

apple ones link to your phone and you can track them, and make them beep loudly if you’ve misplaced one. We’d have lost loads if it wasn’t for that function!

Get whichever ones in your budget. Get them from the Apple store and the case can be engraved for free.

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 28/11/2022 12:55

So they have to be Apple do they?? I bought JLab ones from Argos. Around £18. Paid an extra £3 for accidental damage etc. Excellent quality, charge, connection and comfort. Of course if a 12 year old wants Apple these wouldn’t cut it and you’d need to check! But maybe they’re using ‘Airpod’ as a generic term for Bluetooth earphones.

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 28/11/2022 12:57

These are my little beauties!

WeAllHaveWings · 28/11/2022 12:59

ds(18) has had the 2nd gen ones for a couple of years. I have the airpod pros. Between the two of them I'd say the 2nd gen ones are more suitable.

I offered ds the 3rd gen ones for Christmas this year but he says he is happy with the ones he has (even though they have a crack in them!) and doesn't like the shorter style of the new ones.

The tracking facility has recently been improved but still doesn't work if they are in their case and the case is closed.

Today is the last day you get a £25 apple voucher if you purchase from the apple store (can maybe put towards an airtag too?)

Get the cheapest ones you can find for that age they will get lost or dropped (bitter experience). Unless you have one of those very careful children

Wickerblanketbasket · 28/11/2022 13:05

I'd say get the 2nd or 3rd gen as the pros have a rubber bit that go in the ear and my son Hates it as I think his ears are just too small for it.
I've just got him the 2nd gen for his 12th birthday as he mentioned (hinted) he would prefer those ones.

MarcelEtCeleste · 28/11/2022 16:55

Thanks @WeAllHaveWings and @Wickerblanketbasket I was worried there’d be one model that wasn’t worth the extra £ and I’m glad the cheaper ones seem to be the ones to have!

@Dontfuckingsaycheese I wish these would cut it! To be fair, it’s joint Christmas/birthday gift as they’re so close, so I don’t mind too much.
