Calling different rooms in the house - is it an Echo Dot I need??

First world problem alert!

We are about to move into a 3 floor house, DS (11) will have a room on the top floor. He is forever yelling downstairs for something or I yell up to hurry him or whatever (sounds terrible, we never yell in anger but just to be heard!). Im worried how this will work in a 3 story house - I want some sort of intercom system. Is the Echo Dot what I want? Or any echo? Or another system? Ideally I'd like to be able to say 'Alexa, call DS room' and then talk to him - will that work? Will we be able to do the same with DD when she is old enough or is there a limit to the number of base stations?

I’ve literally JUST been thinking how handy this would be today! My friend’s house growing up had an intercom thing throughout and from the kitchen the mum could call all the kids to dinner etc. Love it!! I’d be tempted to get a wired in one for nostalgia but interested if echo does this as sounds simpler.

Any of the echos will work. You might want to consider a ‘show’ for the kitchen to watch YouTube recipes etc

I just whatsapp the teens. Or ring, if desperate.

I'd get echos rather than dots because the speaker is better and then you have better music quality too.

You can "Alexa drop in on Xx" which will open a 2 way channel with that one room or you can "Alexa do an announcement" which will broadcast a message to all your devices "dinner is ready" is what we use it for!

We have echo dots throughout the house! Very useful, we make announcements all the time…although the kids can get carried away at points.

gogohmm · 27/11/2022 15:55

Yes, I do this!

astronewt · 27/11/2022 15:56

We have Google Home minis which work the same.

ReadyForPumpkins · 27/11/2022 15:59

I have echo dot in the kitchen and DC1 has a sonos with Alexa enabled. They work too. As long as it’s Alexa enabled.

We have spots in most rooms, some echoes (don't really hear/notice any difference tbh) and a show in the kitchen. It's great because you can even drop into them from your phone when you're out the house if someone is conveniently not picking up the phone Wink

Scootergrrrl · 27/11/2022 16:11

They're on special offer until the end of today, I think, so it's worth having a look now. We have them in all the kids' room for calling them down for dinner!

MassiveSalad22 · 27/11/2022 16:16

So would it be Alexa going ‘dinner is ready’, or can you speak directly through them in your lovely warm parental tones a la an intercom?

@MassiveSalad22 like intercoms, nothing much warm about my tone though....I usually use it to shout "be quiet" from another room Grin

demotedreally · 27/11/2022 17:48

Can we make it work with a Sonos? Ours works with hey Google. I'm not sure what would make it work - eg from my phone or I could buy another Sonos
