Anyone else not enjoy putting up Christmas tree?

While I love Christmas and really enjoy all the run up and I love the house all cosy but I don't enjoy the actual 'putting the tree up' it so annoying and time consuming and i hate all the glitter everywhere lol

I'm not ba humbug as once it's up I'm loving it just the hrs worth of slog I don't like

I don’t enjoy it either. Just another job. I don’t put carols on and drink sherry or anything. 😂
One year we put the (artificial) tree back in the loft fully decorated so the next year was brilliant-no faffing about!
That said I don’t even like it when it’s up, just clutters the place up and the cat jumps in it the whole time.

Allthegoodnamesaregoneffs · 27/11/2022 08:59

Putting it away is even worse

doyouwanna · 27/11/2022 08:59

Thank goodness I'm not alone! Everyone else "cannot wait" to put theirs up, mean while I'm eye rolling lol

I'm pleased once it's up, but putting it up and decorating it seems such a chore (see also planting window boxes or hanging baskets).

Sherry would probably improve all the above experiences tbh.

Grown up DC now so I’m just going to delay as long as possible and if nobody mentions it it may not even make it down.

Dogsgottabone · 27/11/2022 09:12

When DC were little, I used to buy the tree on my own after I finished my part time job early afternoon, put it in the stand, put lights on it and have it ready for them the decorate when they came home from school on the second Friday in December.

Now DC insist on choosing the tree and being involved in every aspect. DH and I always have a row about me being a control freak (probably) and it takes hours of a Saturday which could be better spent relaxing!

I'm with you OP

Are you doing it with alcohol and chocolate?

IllDoItButOnlyForTheAttention · 27/11/2022 09:15

I'm the same, I love having it up but absolutely hate the job of doing it. Last year the kids were very keen, so we just got it out and up and they did all the decorating while I put my feet up and watched them. Was brilliant 😊

Hoping they're still as keen this year!

TheChosenTwo · 27/11/2022 09:16

Dh saws the trunk so it fits in the stand, I put the lights on (just 2 strings and always put away properly the year before so not tangled) and the dc decorate it while I sit down with a large drink and watch. I haven’t decorated the tree since they were about 3 and 4! So 14 years 😂 I don’t care about how it looks, I’m just happy that they do it and love doing it. I don’t bother moving things once they’ve gone to bed, I see it as their tree and creation! We go and choose it altogether, though this causes some chaos.
And I do all the taking it down and getting all the decorations off, which I hate.
ours isn’t going up until the 17th so a while to go yet!

Whenever mine did it it was such a shambles I'd have to start again once they were in bed and redo it all. Angry

Not something I enjoy doing
Taking it down is worse

ldontWanna · 27/11/2022 09:38

I don't particularly enjoy having it up (small space, feels cluttered, too much going on) so putting it up feels like even more of a chore.

youagainomg · 27/11/2022 09:39

I don't mind doing it but doing it with small children around stresses me out.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 27/11/2022 09:46

I don’t enjoy it in the same way I did when dds were at home. Mind you, in one way it’s easier now - they used to go with dh to choose a tree and would invariably choose such an enormous one, dh would have to saw at least a foot off the bottom before it would fit under the ceiling, and it’d be so wide, we’d have to shift a lot of furniture around to make a big enough space. It did always look lovely, but I’m glad I can go with him and pick a ‘sensible’ sized one now.

Sherry or mulled wine and a CD of King’s College carols mandatory while decorating, though. 🎄

Lurkingandlearning · 27/11/2022 10:17

I’ve never enjoyed it. My mum loved it so now it is one of the times I miss her so much I could cry and I really am too old to be doing that. I like it once it’s done though.

Eddielizzard · 27/11/2022 10:19

I hate it. I get the kids to help and when they get fed up - it's done. I really couldn't give a shit. It looks like a dog's breakfast and I really couldn't care less. One day I just won't bother with it.

mondaytosunday · 27/11/2022 10:46

Love it. Once I hit my teens I took over decorating our family ten footer. As it required precarious ladder balancing I'm sure my mum was thrilled it was off her hands. My sisters were happy to let me get on with it and eventually it was just me and my dad going off to buy it too.
Next weekend we head off to pick one - sadly my son lives away and is working, so for the first time he won't help choose. I can't tell if he's bothered or not.
Of course while I get help decorating now no one helps me take it down!

dayslikethese1 · 22/12/2022 01:39

I love it, it's my favourite Christmas tradition. Love getting all the old decorations out. No glitter though and no tinsel. We have a fake one so o just get it down the attic and assemble each year. I purposefully chose one that wasn't too big so the room wouldn't seem cluttered (small house).

psychomath · 22/12/2022 08:04

I love the idea, love buying/making new decorations and love looking at it once it's up, but I always drag my feet for days over buying the tree and putting stuff on it. Then I take the decorations off on twelfth night and drag my feet again over taking the tree to the recycling!
