Do you think we'll ever have a white christmas again?

I remember snowy christmases as a kid. It was wonderful. I'll caveat that by saying I was sometimes abroad. But it's so warm at the moment & if this keeps up, I can't ever imagine a snowy christmas happening again. I remember flumping into large snowdrifts in Hampshire in the 70s. What d'you think?

Nope!

In fact I doubt we will have much in the way of a decent snowfall ever again here!

Tescoheslth · 26/11/2022 20:30

No snow again ever again really, we're not even getting frosts now. So frightening how quickly it's all happening 😔

CriticalAlert · 26/11/2022 20:32

TBH I don't want a white Christmas because it means that I will be freezing.

I know it's not what you meant, but the last year to be a white Christmas was apparently 2021!
There is a very, very low bar.

tickticksnooze · 26/11/2022 20:32

Well, if the gulf stream packs up we will have loads of them.

I think that's a little dramatic considering it's only November.

ThatGirlInACountrySong · 26/11/2022 20:35

Proper snow is unlikely

A bit of dirty slush after a poor inch or so is the best we can expect now

Wonder how the ski resorts are faring

Why would we have no snow ever again?
It snowed where I live last winter and there were plenty of frosty days.

grapehyacinthisactuallyblue · 26/11/2022 20:35

I don't know. UK seems to be getting warmer, but there are always odd weird weather happening somewhere. So I think it's unlikely but always possible.

ofwarren · 26/11/2022 20:36

No, I don't think we will have proper white Christmases again as the seasons seem to have shifted and we are more likely to get snow in February now.

I said snow at christmas, it's not really the middle of winter these days

I know, I wasn't responding to you in that post

Tescoheslth · 26/11/2022 20:38

I'm not talking about it only being November, look at the trends over the last 100 years, it's getting warmer and warmer every year. The chances of snow like we had 50 years ago are vanishingly small going forwards.

tobee · 26/11/2022 20:38

We did have snow not that long ago in London and the south east. In 2008 - 2009 - snow actually in October.

I remember denier types saying "global warming? What global warming?" And people having to remind that it's climate change.

It's probably too early to say that we won't get it again in London for eg. But maybe that was the last?

amicissimma · 26/11/2022 20:38

"There is a very, very low bar."

Isn't it defined as one snowflake falling on the roof of the London Weather Centre?

onmywayamarillo · 26/11/2022 20:38

Only white Christmas in south England I remember was 2009 rare occurrence

WingBingo · 26/11/2022 20:39

I read once that it was statistically more likely to snow at Easter Christmas

plus I am in Devon so it rarely snows

WingBingo · 26/11/2022 20:39

*At Easter than Christmas

Tescoheslth · 26/11/2022 20:40

Thing is yes there may have been flakes or even the odd day of snow but when I was a teenager/ young adult I frequently had to dig my car out of drifts that lasted days if not weeks. That just doesn't happen any more, it's a fact 😔

Beanbagtrap · 26/11/2022 20:41

It's rarely snowy at Xmas. Don't people assume it should be because of Dickens? But actually it's never been that common. It usually snows Feb/early march.

tobee · 26/11/2022 20:42

The snow of 2008 - 2009 went on for weeks. And, as I say London which is supposed end warmer as built up. I remember my dparents and dfil were snowed/iced in in Surrey

Trulyweird1 · 26/11/2022 20:42

Not sure if you have a specific area of the UK in mind, but we had a shot load of snow in Scotland last winter; white Christmas where I was, and the hills were white last weekend, and have so far stayed that way ( NE Scotland/ Cairngorms)
But it doesn’t hang about around the coast.

Yarrawonga · 26/11/2022 20:44

The last white Christmas I remember was 2010. It was pretty bad.

We always got snow in February in South Wales when I was growing up. Ruined a lot of my birthday parties.

Where you live. In many parts of Scotland, it is very often snowy at Christmas.
