Sweet story or scam

Someone close to me is smitten with a woman he met about 6 weeks ago. It's lovely to see, if a bit quick. They met initially on a plane. Didn't speak until the last 10 mins of the flight and didn't swap numbers, but then, a few days later they were matched on a dating app and have been madly in love ever since.

He's currently on a trip to her home country to meet her family, having borrowed the money for the flights.

Anyway the vast majority of people you tell the story to say "aw how sweet, it must be fate" or some such, but a couple of people's response has been "sounds like a scam to me".

Where would you sit?

Difficult to say really. Sometimes physical attraction is instant and very strong and people think they are in love. Then getting to know the person they realise therea nothing else but great sex.( until that fades!!)
Only a scam really if one of them.has loads of money imo

How would it be a scam? Has he given her money?

SheWoreYellow · 26/11/2022 11:51

Depends on what her home country is, I think.

I don't know but he's borrowed money to go on a trip he can't afford. AFAIK he didn't pay for her ticket, but I'm sure he will spend money on her during the trip.

I didn't see it as a scam, until that was the response of a couple of people whose opinions I respect.

I think you need to be clearer about who has borrowed money, and from whom.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 26/11/2022 11:55

If she asks him for money, it's a scam.

Depending on where she lives, it could also be motivated by a desire to marry him in order to get residency in the UK. Goodness knows why anyone would want to live here at the moment, but still ...

CheckedPJ · 26/11/2022 11:58

He's borrowed money on a credit card to pay for the flight - AFAIK only his own.

It's the US and she's clear she only plans to stay in UK for a couple of years.

Is she quite attractive and he isn't?

Tbh I don't see the "scam" yet. He borrowed the money to pay for his own flight because he wanted to see/be with her. Ofc she might be playing a long game, but that's always a possibility in a lot of relationships.
