What was the best present you got as a new mum?

My lovely friend just had her baby and I want to send something for the baby and for her. My two are teenagers now so I am out of touch with what would make a good gift these days. I'd love to hear what gifts other people received that they really loved so I can steal an idea!

My sister made us a yummy pie and a delicious cake - all the snacks and treats were very much appreciated when we were struggling to cook and leave the house in those very first newborn days. When I was breastfeeding non-stop you cannot have too many snacks!!

MojoJojo71 · 26/11/2022 12:51

A storage box full of nappies and a bottle of Champagne

Porridgeislife · 26/11/2022 12:58

A Cook voucher, we really did live on this for a few weeks.

A really good water bottle with a straw and Contigo hot drink flask. A box of snacks that can be stashed in a bedside drawer for middle of the night munchies.

We also got given a fantastic nappy bin (Ubbi brand) which has been a lifesaver.

We got given multiple blankets, socks, mittens etc and except for one particularly lovely blanket from Toffee Moon we haven’t used any of them.

We also got given some lovely flowers but as I mostly sat in bed for the first week establishing feeding & recovering from a c-section, they sat in the kitchen unappreciated as we didn’t have any space in the bedroom for them. Plus we didn’t have enough suitable vases.

My friend made me a hamper of Neals Yard bath oils, food i couldn't eat when pregnant (including a little bottle of red wine) and lots of little things for me. She also remembered the baby and put a lovely book in there.

Mum's get forgotten about in the excitement of a new baby and chances are she's already got everything she needs.

Two days worth of M&S ready meals for me, DH and toddler DS, complete with puddings and custard; nice tea bags and biscuits. Preprepped veg. Some fresh fruit.

GreyhairedHobbit · 26/11/2022 13:31

My Nan brought a homemade apple pie and custard round, it was gorgeous. A friend bought me a mini food processor for baby purees, fab!

At this time of year, get a tuppence and crumble star wrap.

Second this! Best thing I ever bought, quicker to put on than a coat and great to layer up in the pram!

loveisanopensore · 26/11/2022 13:36

My friend got me a snot suction bulb. It's been brilliant through two babies.

Shesasuperfreak · 26/11/2022 13:38

I never got it but I would have loved to have had vouchers for a cleaner for a few cleans

FearofQueefing · 26/11/2022 15:08

Offers of babysitting.

Had no family nearby to help and just having someone to push the baby around in the buggy for a couple of hours so I could get some sleep was worth it's weight in gold...

Lapland123 · 26/11/2022 15:11

another fan of cook shop voucher for new parents here! You are gifting her time and healthy food by giving this, and that is precious!
I really liked a personalised blanket with baby’s name and DOB if you want to give something for baby

palmerita · 26/11/2022 15:12

Friends delivered food packages, my mum took my overflowing wash basket, bath cooked meals in my freezer. Anything to lighten the load is a wonderful gift, and a lovely soft blanket xx

Lapland123 · 26/11/2022 15:12

Had never heard a tuppence and crumble star wrap before this thread… have just looked and I’ve never seen anything so adorable!!!

FrancescaContini · 26/11/2022 15:15

Chocolate
Chocolate cake
Champagne

No babygros

karmalama · 26/11/2022 15:44

Next door neighbour dropped round a home made shepherds pie, 28 years later I'm still grateful !
Those wraps are gorgeous, just bought one for impending grand baby , thank you

StollenAway · 26/11/2022 15:54

I have a friend who is Indian and she filled my freezer with home made curry… that was amazing!

I wouldn’t personally buy someone a nappy bin as not everyone uses disposables…

riotlady · 26/11/2022 16:04

One of my friends sent me a massive bottle of nice gin with a note that said “figured you had enough stuff for the baby, this ones for
you!”

As lovely as all the muslins and nipple creams were, it was really nice to have a present that was for me-as-a-person and not me-as-a-mum

AgathaMystery · 26/11/2022 16:05

A very dear friend sent me an absolutely amazing box of artisan cheeses. It was an incredible gift! They came in a fantastic box and I plonked my tiny baby in amongst the cheese & took a photo! Honestly it was a lovely gift.

Carbon12 · 26/11/2022 18:59

Food hamper
Deliveroo voucher

Someone suggested cleaner and that is another good one.

You could maybe offer to go over one day for a couple of hours to help with housework.

Pompom2367 · 26/11/2022 19:05

Just eat voucher lol I loved it

RitaSueandBobtwo · 26/11/2022 19:08

Favourite present was from my best friend some lovely Clarins shower gel for me so I felt nice fresh and clean on a morning (it was a relief not to smell of baby milk and sick) and a reindeer soft toy for DS who was a Christmas baby.

Two other lovely presents were a white handmade crocheted baby blanket and some lovely homemade millionaires shortbread (it was supposed to be for visitors but DH and I kept it for ourselves).

RambamThankyouMam · 26/11/2022 19:11

Definitely food! And a quilt with DD's name and date of birth on it.

The two gifts I remember most are a meal our Rabbi and his wife brought around, and the quilt from a friend of MIL's.

Dogtooth · 26/11/2022 19:14

I sent friends some of this www.latuapasta.com/

It can be frozen, easy to cook, delicious and a treat.

Sparklybutold · 26/11/2022 19:15

A close friend sent a big box of stuff from nappies, nipple cream, chocolate, breastfeeding pads, make up, bubble bath you name it - lots of little useful and thoughtful stuff.

JennyForeigner · 26/11/2022 19:17

My mum hand-knitted some of those lovely light baby blankets in a plain stitch I have always liked.

Alternatively a copy of 10 Little Fingers 10 Little Toes and a box of champagne truffles.
