When to acknowledge marriage with a gift? Official wedding or one I go to?

A family member is having a short legal ceremony in January (just the two of them and a best friend each), ahead of their (non legal) Wedding in the Grooms home town (in Italy) next August.

Feels odd not to at least acknowledge the January event, with a gift, but then equally, I won't attend the wedding I'm invited to without a gift.
