Smart meter or not?

We’ve been offered a smart meter, would you get one?

We’ve had ours two years and it has only briefly worked twice, for about a month each time. That’s across three suppliers. They raise orders to get it looked at. Nothing happens. It annoys the hell out of me to have to still read it manually every month, and I gave away my old OWL usage monitor to rely on the remote display of the smart meter instead so now I can’t track usage.

So personally I am deeply unimpressed.

They are useful to track your energy usage. So if you have teens that keep leaving lights on everywhere, you can see and track how much that costs... then give them a bit of a guilt trip about it.

I keep being bombarded with "offers" to install a smart meter.
It's getting worse than email spam was before spam filters.
Not happening, not in a month of Sundays.
You gain nothing, all you achieve is to let a company have remote control over your energy supply.
You can buy online plenty of gadgets to help you with monitoring your usage, some of them will give you better and more detailed information than any smart meter.
You can also look for tips for improving the thermal insulation of your house/flat - that is far more likely to help for real.
