Using friend's email for universal credit account

I am helping my mentally ill friend apply for universal credit. She is currently homeless and has burned through her divorce monies with only a few thousand left due to her mania. She has severe mental illness and believes that nefarious entities are tracking her.hence she doesn't want to use her email to apply for universal credit. I met her today and was helping her fill in her application so thought she should use mine.

I am not done filling in her application yet as the library we were in closed while we were midway through her application. Is it fine that she is using my email address to fill out the form. I also found the whole UC application confusing as there doesn't seem to be a way to amend certain sections. Could someone advise..

I think we will go to a hub where someone from the council can help us and also her father will attend..he has a better idea of her finances and is probably in a better position to fill in her application.. unfortunately they have a bad relationship which is why I am kinda taking over in some respect.

But I don't want my friend to be sanctioned or lose out due to my ignorance of the benefits system. Btw she has been sectioned multiple times and has social workers , key workers etc on her case..they are not the best..

I really don’t know, but I would call someone like Citizens Advice, they might be able to help or a least advise you of the best way to help.

Would it not be better just to help her set I
Up a Gmail or something for herself?

She has several emails but she is also not in her right mind, she thinks people are tracking her so she was going around in a blonde wig and sunglasses today.

Don't use your email address. It could leave you open to allsorts of hassle. Set up a new one for her

Set up a new email. UC tend to text as communation anyway, rather than email. A current phone number is more important.

Citizens advice have a designated Help to Claim team who will help her set up a claim and support their through to her first payment. I'm not sure if there will be a problem her having burnt through a lot of money and now needing to claim benefits but presumably they might take her mental health into consideration.

I agree she should use her own email. If you ever need to make a Uc claim yourself it could cause problems.

NotABeliever · 25/11/2022 23:16

The problem she will have if she used your email address is that every time she needs to login, a code is sent either to the email or mobile that's registered. So she can't login until you give her the code.

Other than that, it's quite common for vulnerable adults to use someone else's email address for UC and it shouldn't cause any problems.

NotABeliever · 25/11/2022 23:17

Forgot to say, if she can't manage her claim online, CAB can help with a telephone claim although it's far from ideal because you have to rely on the call centre to manage your claim rather than do it yourself online.

If she is that ridiculous, set up a new gmail account and pretend its yours
