What size knitting needles do I need please?

I need some help from experienced knitters please. I want to buy some knitting needles as a Christmas present (and some wool) She’s said she wants to make a chunky blanket so what would be the best size needles to buy, and wool?

I'd say a 7, but you really need to know what wool she'll be using and what pattern she's planning

I’d say a 10mm and super chunky if she’s a total beginner.

Thanks. Does it matter how long they are or are they sort of standard lengths?

She will need circular needles, cable length of 150cm. Wooden needles as they’re more grippy than metal, less chance of stitches slipping off.

The band around the wool will tell you the recommended size of needles.

has she knitted before?

Yes but only scarves!
