I had gestational diabetes and am now 8 weeks post partum, I am aware I need to do some kind of blood test, the hospital midwife's and my normal midwife all kept saying it's a gtt 6 weeks post partum, the doctor is saying just the hbac1 test needs doing, is this correct ?

Hba1c is what we advise

Assuming you didn’t have any kind of diabetes before pregnancy you should have a HBA1C test after 13 weeks OR a fasting plasma glucose test 6 to 13 weeks after the birth. OGTT is not usually offered.

I'll be 9 weeks pp when I've had it, but I haven't been told to fast ?

I’ve had GD twice and it’s usually HBA1C blood test postpartum. I’d refuse another GTT. Made me vomit.

IggyAce · 25/11/2022 21:14

You don’t need to fast for a hba1c test.

MajesticElephant · 25/11/2022 21:18

Don’t worry too much. If you get a below diabetic range on this test you are good to go. If it comes back in the pre-diabetic or diabetic range you would usually have to have a second test to confirm regardless. Best of luck!

Im type 1 diabetic (developed during first pregnancy) and never fasted for HBA1C test.

MajesticElephant · 25/11/2022 21:25

Just to clarify - you don’t have to fast for HbA1C. You do have to fast for a fasting plasma glucose test which is the NICE recommended test for women between 6-13 weeks PP (with non pre existing diabetes). But as I said OP you would need a second test to confirm ongoing diabetes so don’t worry too much! :)
