“It has been a very tough year, with the economic situation facing the country and the entire world, but it is great to hear they are doing their bit.

“They are at the cutting edge because they are handing out parcels to those most in need of them and they should be applauded.

“But we did not have to have foodbanks – I understand people fall on hard times but we live in a very civilised society now with lots of support and benefits.

“There were more people starving when there was no welfare state and no benefits – if you were unemployed, you would starve.

“In Colchester in the 1930s, my grandad used to walk over the bodies of people who had starved to death every morning.”

You heard it here first folk, foodbanks do a great job but we don’t actually need them cause we have “lots of benefits and support”

The tories won't be happy til they're walking over dead bodies of people who've starved to death.

Och that's nothing. Up in Aberdeenshire in the 1930s they couldn't afford dead bodies to pave the roads. My Grandad said he walked to work on the bodies of alive unemployed people who were waiting to die. Over on the West Coast my Granny said food hadn't actually got there yet. All they could afford was breathing and hoping food would be invented soon.

Future Tory parliamentary candidate no doubt.

I'm utterly confused. I've heard of the famine in Ireland, Bengal, Ukraine, Ethiopia and many other places. But never in my 50+ years have I heard about the Great Famine of Colchester. Can this Tory please explain to me how my education under Thatcher was so inadequate that it never even touched on the period in British history when you had to step over dead bodies in the street?

It's a Tory fantasy to be able to walk over the starved bodies of the poor. They probably have think tanks on how to engineer such a scenario.

This coming winter they'll have a double whammy of freezing, starving poor people to walk over. They've never had it so good. This lot make Thatcher look like Mother Theresa.
