(Big if!) do you think everyone will forget the shit show if it being in QAtar, the human rights, the mess that is FIFA?

Just pondering. It won't change my opinion but I can see there being a seismic shift if it did happen.

Guess it doesn't apply to England, but all nations.

Thems that are bothered about football have ignored the other things going on in Qatar.
Thems that are bothered by issues in Qatar won't be celebrating a football world cup win.

TooLeftForMN · 25/11/2022 13:24

Don't worry it won't happen 😂

It's not happening so I wouldn't think too much about it.

NotAScot · 25/11/2022 13:58

It's always problematic when politics mixes with sports. That's the way it's always been, Olympics in German, China, Russia, etc.

I'd be delighted for the English team if they win. Fingers crossed, and with a bit of luck along the way I think we have a good chance.

2bazookas · 25/11/2022 14:07

I probably won't even notice and certainly won't care.

x2boys · 25/11/2022 14:08

Mumsnet won't ,there will be eleventy billion threads on here about how much they are not watching.England ,but the rest of England might get a little bit excited .

BarryK3nt · 25/11/2022 14:09

Yeah definitely, we’re playing really well, think we’ve got a good chance of winning it.

Georgeskitchen · 25/11/2022 14:11

What seismic shift do you think will happen?

Given that commentators are still going on about 1966 , I think your telly will have to be off a lot longer !

Goingfortheblue · 25/11/2022 14:12

I mean, I hope they win it - I caught the last 10 minutes of the Wales-Iran match earlier and I was gutted for the welsh fans, but I don't think England would make a big deal of winning anyway would they? I never, ever hear about the last time they won, when was that again?

I am not Welsh or English.

I am bothered about football. It's a big part of my life.

I'm not prepared to watch any of this WC and my view isn't going to change in the unlikely event that England win it.

They've played one match against Iran. A little too soon to say they've a good chance of winning.

Winning the World Cup is a hellishly difficult task. You need a lot of luck. England are also playing in a hot desert country a long way from home. If this World Cup were in Sweden or Holland, I’d say we’ve got a chance. But beating teams like Brazil and France in that boiling heat is a big ask. If we beat the US tonight, ideally in an exciting high scoring game, and then make it to the quarters or semis, with plenty of goals, that will be a good tournament.

(To be honest, I don’t want us to win. I just can’t stand the hysteria.)

the80sweregreat · 25/11/2022 14:28

They won't win it
Harry Kane's 520 k rainbow watch was classy though.

The temperature in Qatar at 10 pm is 24C, the weather is no excuse. Summer is brutal winters are pleasant that's why they moved it to November/December.

bloodyplanes · 25/11/2022 14:45

Yeah they will forget it and all the players, media hypocrites critics and swan off on their annual winter holiday to Dubai another country with an appalling human rights record, built off the back of modern day slavery!

bloodyplanes · 25/11/2022 14:46

Fat fingers!
Players and media hypocrites
Will swan off

balalake · 25/11/2022 15:24

You did not say which year or decade, OP. It will take more than one team having a very bad day for that to happen in 2022. I know it has been a strange year though.

von1471 · 25/11/2022 17:48

They won’t.

Brahumbug · 25/11/2022 17:53

If England do win I shall certainly enjoy the formation fly past of the Gloucester Old Spot squadron.

OldTriangleRoad · 25/11/2022 17:55

Everyone in our house is excited for the games, thinking we have a great chance. Living in Scotland, and even my boys who normally support Rangers in club football, are shouting for England :)

WeAreTheHeroes · 25/11/2022 17:58

If England win the men's world cup, we'll never hear the end of it.

DirtyBlonde · 25/11/2022 18:03

If we actually win, then yes people will be jubilant.

And in the future, people will forget the venue (1966 is only memorable because it was a home win)

But I don't think the overall opinion of Qatar - which exists in more than just England/Wales/rest of UK - is going to change
