Private ultrasound asap

MissShapesMissStakes · 25/11/2022 12:49

My dh has just been told he has to get a scan on a lump he has on his testicle. We are both panicking as he also has some other worrying long term symptoms.

The NHS referral will be 'a few weeks' and we want to hurry up the process by getting a private scan.

Any recommendations?

Midlands/north ideally

I would try a private hospital (rather than an private imaging/ ultrasound centre as reporting of imaging can sometimes, not always, be less good in those). There is a spire hospital in little aston and are doubtless other private hospitals that do ultrasounds near you. Google and you can contact them to find out which private hospitals do ultrasounds and enquire re prices and appointments. Make sure that they give your son a disk of images and a report (when available) - they may want to send report to gp rather than patient but should definitely give your son copy of ultrasound on disk. NHS consultant can ask his own hospital to electronically request the ultrasound images from the private hospital but they cannot obtain the report that way.

Private hospitals may require a referral from your gp.

Has your GP requested an NHS scan yet? If you haven't already, I'd give your local radiology dept a call first just incase. This is where I work and we get testes scans in within a week most of the time. Would save you a few hundred pounds.

MissShapesMissStakes · 25/11/2022 14:45

@wildpeaches thank you.
He literally had the appointment this morning so I don't know how it works. If it's electronic/emails referrals or what?!

The GP said 'a few weeks' but dh was in such a panic he didn't know if that was for letter or appointment or what.

So scared and panicking so we've both been searching all over the internet to see what we can book fast. So many huge companies doing private but I don't know how that would effect nhs treatment.

We went private when this happened at the beginning of first lockdown to our then 16yr old son. We contacted a private hospital direct (rang them) and they sorted it out there end and we rang the GP to get them to refer - this was done by email straight to the hospital. Cost about £350 if I remember rightly. Didn't see a consultant just the sonographer. It was a cyst thank goodness. So best advise - ring the hospital direct or the private scanning place if using one.

Many thanks everyone. We did what was suggested and he called the radiology department who had already got his details but not processed them. They made him an appointment for Tuesday morning which is fantastic!

We had booked a private one miles away for Monday so can cancel that now.

I'm so grateful for your advice as if he hadn't rung the woman said they'd have sent him a letter out on Monday to call them for an appointment. So it's shaved at least days off the wait hopefully.

Just need to get through the wait for the results now.

Hi. What was the results?
My husband is going Tuesday for a scan and trying to find information. Did they give you any idea at the appt what it may be?
