If you wake up early due to insomnia

What do you do with your time?

Yet again I’ve woken up before 5am due to peri-menopause. I’m sitting in bed with the cat on me listening to podcasts, and wondering if I should/could be doing something useful.

Same, even down to the cat!

em I’ve just booked my mot, am trying to do todays wordle and wondering should I turn on my work laptop for a bit…

Tiggy321 · 25/11/2022 05:17

I read on my kindle, do Amazon shopping, stress about life and want to smother my DH who is snoring next to me!

UncomfortableSilence · 25/11/2022 05:23

I start waking from around 1 on and off then wake for the day between 4-5, in the week my alarm is set for work at 5.50 so I scroll on my phone till then. At the weekend I pretty much do the same until around 6 when I will get up and make a start on the housework or catch up on emails, then have my breakfast in peace catching up with something I've recorded in the week because I'm too tired to stay up to watch anything Confused

I usually study something

Jericha · 25/11/2022 05:28

Oh hey there fellow non sleepers! Currently waking up at 4am because of pregnancy. I usually do a bit of work then finish a bit earlier or I watch Netflix but it's my son's birthday today and I just know if I sneak downstairs he'll wake up and see it as fair game to nag for his presents.

Yetanothernamechange123 · 25/11/2022 05:30

Do Wordle and try to put off getting up until 5.45!

Tangerineartichoke · 25/11/2022 05:32

I am nearly always awake at 4 am. I washed laundry before bed. This morning I hung the laundry on airers and put the dehumidifer on in that room. Fed the cat and now we are hanging out in the bed in the spare room\my morning bed. I try not to do to much because I don't want to disturb anyone else. My DH will be awake around 6 am. I like to think this 2 hour block of peace and quiet is my time. Sometimes I read, sometimes watch movies on the tablet.

amylou8 · 25/11/2022 05:32

I go to bed at 8 and get up at 4. I live alone and am self employed so am lucky enough to be completely on my own time table whatever my body decides that is lol.

MinnieMountain · 25/11/2022 05:32

Maybe I should do the meal planning.

My cat loves it. I suppose come the summer I can go for walks.

I am off to the gym at 6am

MinnieMountain · 25/11/2022 05:35

@amylou8 it’s times like this that it would be nice to live alone. I have an office job but it would be lovely to be able to clatter around the kitchen right now. I need to make Welsh cakes today.

I went down stairs, made a coffee, ironed ds's shirt while the kettle was boiling, and have now come back to bed for an hour's coffee, peace and warmth. I've read the news. paid a bill.

I quite like it. It's the only truly relaxed chill-out time I get. 😊

Suzi888 · 25/11/2022 05:54

Come on mn. Everyone else is asleep, otherwise I’d start housework.

I listen to podcasts, do wordle and quordle and scroll through mn. Wish I could get a cup of tea but the kettle would wake everyone in the house.

Can you boil water in the microwave? That's less noisy than a kettle.

LaughingLemur · 25/11/2022 06:07

I've tried before and it still woke up my very light sleeper DD2. Thanks for the idea though.

1ittlegreen · 25/11/2022 06:08

It's so frustrating as there's little point trying to get back to sleep at this time.

If I feed the cats they will piss off for the day and I want them all warm and stretchy on the bed with me!

Boringly, doing some personal admin and reading mn.

gianfrancogorgonzola · 25/11/2022 06:08

Have a lovely peaceful coffee and do some yoga

Uninterestedfamily · 25/11/2022 06:11

Make a tea, mnet, read, nothing much. I usually feel guilty about not using the time more productively.

Dontsparethehorses · 25/11/2022 06:13

Coffee, wordle, kindle, mn - today I’ve been doing bit of work on a presentation as found out I’ve got an interview next week 😀

CrackersCheeseAndWinePlease · 25/11/2022 06:13

I'm usually awake between 5sm and 5.30. I get up, have a coffee and scroll on Mumsnet until everyone else is up

dontcallmethatyoucunt · 25/11/2022 06:14

Make a cuppa and read rubbish in the internet (ahem!) Have you not got HRT? It’s helped me. I’m awake early today due to a cold

Merrow · 25/11/2022 06:17

I go swimming, admittedly in the hope it helps with the insomnia rather than any virtuous health goals! It is a nice way to stay the day though, and the local pool is open from 5.

In my more normal days of waking before the rest of the family (but after 6am) I had a coffee downstairs and it was lovely and peaceful. I'm lucky that it doesn't wake anyone! We got MIL a really quiet kettle, worth the investment? I think the hot drink is essential, especially in this weather!
