WhatsApp etiquette

I am on a WhatsApp group. How do I leave the group without WhatsApp blaring out “ROUNDLAMPSHADE HAS LEFT THE GROUP”?

I have put the group on mute but I should have left ages ago and now I can’t leave as everyone in the group will now know that I was still listening in, as it were.

I’m not sure how technically savvy they are to swipe and read the list of people who have read the messages. If they do, they’ll still see I’m part of the group.

This post is to ask how to cover my tracks as it will be a bit embarrassing for all concerned if I leave the group now.

Does this make sense?

You can't. There is no way.

DatingDinosaur · 24/11/2022 17:39

Oh just do it. What’s the big deal?

People unfriend each other all the time on farcebook and nobody actually gives a crap.

Times change, people change, interests change.

Who cares.

SomethingWitty44 · 24/11/2022 17:45

Only the group admin will be notified that you've left.

isthismylifenow · 24/11/2022 17:47

The whole group doesn't get notified anymore.

Just leave.

Only the group admin will be notified that you've left.

Every time somebody leaves a group I’m in, it notifies the whole group in the chat body.

OP I really wouldn’t worry about just leaving. It really isn’t difficult to check group members so if they really didn’t want you lurking the admins could have ejected you long ago. And if you’re so peripheral to the group that they’ve not noticed you haven’t contributed in forever, are they really going to be bothered that you’ve now opted to leave?

Mamette · 24/11/2022 17:49

Can you not just archive the chat?

Invisimamma · 24/11/2022 17:49

Only the admin gets notified now.

They are talking about you aren't they? 😔

ScrappyCats · 24/11/2022 17:51

I want to know this too.

If it is noticed that I have left then that I will never be invited to anything with that friendship group again, have already refused several invitations but for my reasons of my own that I don’t want to disclose to group.

I just want to slink out quietly or find a way to properly hide it from my whatsapp

harly5 · 24/11/2022 17:55

I was in a group last week and it notified me of people leaving, I wasn't the admin, so I'm not sure how correct that is. WhatsApp does work differently across different systems Ie apple/android so it probably depends on that. I have iPhone.

Someaddedsugar · 24/11/2022 17:56

I think you have to change the settings for it to only notify the admin

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 24/11/2022 17:56

The notiication to all has stopped hssnt it?

Roundlampshade · 24/11/2022 22:25

Thanks everyone.

No, they haven’t been talking about me 😉

i think they’ve forgotten all about me. It’s a charity thing, not a social thing.
