It's about the size of a caterpillar but I've never seen one this dark before and thought caterpillars were only around in the spring/summer?
I thought it was a little twig first then it moved !

Any ideas what it is? Thanks in advance

I think it’s an elephant hawk moth caterpillar

CosmopolitanPlease · 24/11/2022 15:31

It looks a lot like Scott Mills.

Could it be the second one on this page?

I think you should be worried.
Check in at regular intervals op..

It certainly looks like a moth caterpillar, and I would guess it might be the larva of an Angle Shades moth. The lay eggs in spring and autumn, the autumn larvae can be active throughout the winter, but photo not really clear enough to be definite.

Confession - I did think it might be Scott Mills so I flushed it

If I'd thought about it being a moth caterpillar, I'd have probably not flushed it but would have had to put it somewhere outside (sheltered) overnight in case it turned into something sinister overnight....

I've just had a thought.

I guess it's unlikely that moths only lay one egg, so I'm going to find more aren't I.....

I promise not to flush any others I find.
