New windows quote £42,000

User19886 · 24/11/2022 14:57

Hello, I have got quotes for new windows (5 windows, 2 rear doors), sash accoya (conservation area). The quote is £42,000. Is this similar to other people's experiences? I was hoping for less than half of that being a 2 bed midterrace.

Wow! Windows are super expensive and made cheaply in eastern Europe for the most part if wood. War and post Brexit import fees have made that all but disappear. But that does sound extreme. Try the property board.

barskits · 24/11/2022 15:05

That's a lot, crikey! Are you going to ask another firm for a quote?

BarbaraofSeville · 24/11/2022 15:09

I'd be hoping that windows for a 2 bed terrace would cost less than £10k.

I'm not sure what 'sash accoya' means, hand carved from very rare wood by artisans?

4 bed terrace in a conservation area so also wooden sash. No doors - cheapest of 3 quotes was £35k...

greenacrylicpaint · 24/11/2022 15:11

that's a lot.
gilded frames? Grin

get another quote, don't go for national companies.

I would expect 1-1.5k per window and 2-3k per door.

3WildOnes · 24/11/2022 15:11

Sash windows are really expensive. We paid a fortune to have a single window replaced years ago.

whirlyhead · 24/11/2022 15:13

I paid about £18,000 to replace all the windows and 2 doors in a semi-detached property around about 1998 so I'm not that surprised... it isn't cheap.

AnnaMagnani · 24/11/2022 15:22

For sash windows is refurbishment an option for you?

superplumb · 24/11/2022 15:34

4 bed semi with french doors. For wild quotes from 30k and then they speak to the manager and do it for 10k. I went with a local place who did them for 8k. Shop around...very easy to get conned

boboshmobo · 24/11/2022 15:38

We had ours done on a large detached house admittedly 15'years ago but they were £3500! Have things really gone up that much!?

We used a local company , not any of the big chains! Get more quotes !!

@superplumb , the OP has indicated that hers have to be wooden as she lives in a conservation area.

The price you've indicated is for plastic ones so can't be compared.

My mistake , no not wooden . I know they cost much more but £42k! Is madness !

TheTeenageYears · 24/11/2022 15:42

Was that with a company like Everest? It's been 20+ years since we got window quotes but they were more than double the price of local firms at first quote - they work on the basis that they will heavily negotiate down.

vera99 · 24/11/2022 15:42

My mate is a builder he goes direct to a manufacturer in Lewisham but there are probably plenty of others around. You could measure up carefully get them made at almost wholesale prices and get a jobbing builder to fit them. Probably 2-3 days work

Acheyknees · 24/11/2022 15:43

Our wooden windows were made by a local joiner. Much cheaper

ChickpeaPie · 24/11/2022 15:44

Everest quoted us £60,000 for wooden sash windows!

We are in the middle of having our new bespoke wooden windows put in, £14k for 8 windows and 2 external doors (engineered wood). Our quotes ranged from £14-28k

We have a thatched cottage although it is not listed so we had a bit of flex with materials. The £28k quote was for hardwood.

Ours were made in Poland, much cheaper than the ones made here but just as beautifully made. I can PM you who we used if that is helpful? It’s a UK company but Polish manufacturer.

Please please do PM me! I originally wanted accoya timber due to the guarantee against rot for 50 years but now at the point where I'll take anything! 😂 other people on my street were rejected at planning for UPVC so it has to be timber. They all are sash on my street and all look the same.

There is a company called George Barnsdale who make wooden windows in the UK, Lincolnshire I think. They do lots of heritage work. They use a local fitters to fit the windows.
Might be worth having a look at them and find their local partner.
Although our house isn't old DH wanted good quality hard wood windows and 16 windows, and back door was £28K last year.

vera99 · 24/11/2022 15:58

It's ridiculous with climate change and the cost of living crisis that councils can insist on such expensive options for replacement. Good PVC-coloured windows to fit in sensitively with the area would surely not be an issue with the look and feel for most untutored gazes.

AnnaMagnani · 24/11/2022 15:59

Try a quote from Timber Windows and bear in mind they always have a sale at New Year.
