Heating on constantly or as and when needed?

I just wanted to get people's experiences of whether it's cheaper to have the heating on fairly low (17-18) constantly or just switch it on and off throughout the day? I've seen conflicting information about what's more cost effective.

The reason I'm asking is I'm expecting a baby in January and as of next month I'll be on maternity leave, so home pretty much all day. I'm usually quite stingy with the heating and just layer up with blankets if I'm cold, but obviously can't do that once the baby's here. Right now for example my living room is apparently 14 degrees, but I'm snuggled up with the cat and I've got my oodie plus a thick blanket on so don't feel cold.

I'm only entitled to maternity allowance so facing quite a significant drop in money and I'm worried about how much our gas bill might cost once baby's here. We've only been in the house for a few months so I'm finding it really hard to predict what our bill might be when we turn the heating on.
