Can’t get GP appointment, need antibiotics, how?!

Hi all. I need antibiotics asap for a chest infection, but I cannot get an appointment at my GP surgery. Is there any other way to get the prescription?! I’ve had a look online and apparently NHS 111 won’t prescribe medication. Feeling worse by the hour

Try 111 they can ask GP for emergency appointment.

Can't pharmacists prescribe some antibiotics now?

StarDolphins · 23/11/2022 10:18

In this situation, I would ring GP practice, tell them you have chest inf & need antibiotics & ask for them to arrange for GP to either ring you, give you an appt or leave out a script. Always works at my practice.

As PP said. Nhs 111. They have prescribed me antibiotics many times.

You can ring 111 for an urgent/out of hours appointment. They can't just 'prescribe antibiotics' but they can make sure you are seen by a doctor who can prescribe if you need them.

Would you be able to pay for a private GP consultation? Either in person or a virtual service like Babylon?

EvilRingahBitch · 23/11/2022 10:27

111 can't prescribe, but they can get you to an OOH emergency GP who can prescribe, possibly, over the phone.

That sounds so good. My GP practice is awful. They tell me the only way to get an appointment is to physically go to the practice at 8am and queue up to bag an appointment. The queue starts at 7:40ish so it’s 20 mins minimum of waiting around in the cold outside before we even get inside. It’s ridiculous!

Yeah, what everyone else has said - either find a pharmacist who can prescribe or call 111 to get a GP appointment.

You might even find you can get one with your own surgery via 111 as they have to keep appointments reserved for referrals.

Lagirl20 · 23/11/2022 10:29

Thanks all, I will ring NHS 111

111 have prescribed meds over the phone for me and DS before. You just have to wait a couple of hours for a call back from a doctor.

They've also booked us appointments at urgent care when we've not been able to get in at the gp.

I have used a private doctor before for my daughter. I think it was £40 and they prescribed her antibiotics.
