How am I up to £8 already?

I’ve been out with the kids since 12.30 got in at five. During that time one was at pre school and the other asleep with white noise. I listened to the radio, had a short shower. Before I left I turned off the heating and I switched off everything at the walls, washing machine dishwashers TVs etc.

How am I already up to £8 on the smart meter? In the morning we watch some TV, boiled kettle and ran the toaster. We haven’t put on the washing machine or dishwasher this today. Is this normal, am I out of touch?

Because you’ve had the heating in all day except when you nipped out?

70sShmeventies · 22/11/2022 18:29

@Hooverphobe it wasn’t on, the thermostat is set to 18 and the house was 19. I turned it off just in case.

We are around £8 a day at the moment (including heating on but not for an extended period)

Mumdiva99 · 22/11/2022 18:32

Seems high.....is your shower electric and very old? How big is the house? We have used £10 today. Mostly gas....

70sShmeventies · 22/11/2022 18:35

4 bed detached. No electric shower. I’ve managed to get it as low as £4 some days so wondering what it could be. Electric dryer on this morning maybe. We are getting mould and damp because I’ve not been putting the heating on. I don’t know how else I’m supposed to dry the clothes.

Large 4 bed detached - £8 for the day. Includes:

2 hours gas heating + hot water
2 dishwashers (eco setting)
1 washing machine (not eco setting)
cooked breakfast, lunch and dinner (using oven and electric hob) for ages in total
heated rack & dehumidifier on much of the day
TV and laptops and kettles etc.

You need to look at your usage.

I literally have no idea, OP.
We have solar panels & our heating, oil, isn't on much (dispute situation with DH). DH is now washing a lot by hand else we would run Dwasher every other day.

Our Direct Debit for Lekki is down to £3/month because of govt subsidy.
I put kettle on at least 5x/day, radio or music is on a lot, DH watches TV a lot of the day, we cook full meals on hob, 2 little fridges, lots of laptops & gadgets, microwave & toaster all get used most days lots.

I have literally no idea how other people are using so much electricity.

Nectarpeach · 22/11/2022 19:10

We had the heating on all day yesterday, both kids had a bath and I showered after work, total gas usage was £6.40.
Electric we used £2.65 and had the washing machine on once, electric airer, dehumidifier, Christmas tree lights plus normal usage like lights, kettle, air fryer, TV, laptop during the day

Speedweed · 22/11/2022 19:18

Is your smartmeter right? Mine's not, it bears no correlation to the bill at all, and at the moment shows anything between 7 and 15 kwh a day of usage, which doesn't bear any resemblance to whether we're in or not. A total waste of time to even have it plugged in.

FourTeaFallOut · 22/11/2022 19:20

We are at £6.87. Dinner is done but I still need to run the dishwasher.

It was £10.65 yesterday because it was fucking freezing outside.

MCHammersmutha · 22/11/2022 19:28

Check your fridge freezer, it might be a guzzler.

70sShmeventies · 22/11/2022 19:35

@Speedweed didnt know they could be wrong, that would be a relief but sounds too good to be true!

@MCHammersmutha the fridge freezer was bought about 2 years ago so should be ok I’d have thought? I’ll check it’s wnwegy rating though.

its so disheartening to be trying but still see it tick up. Kids now bathed every other day, fastidious with lights etc etc.
