Virgin hair - never been coloured before.

Teen would like to dye it blue - I think they would totally rock the look.

Natural hair colour is a light brown.

Where do we start?

Try with blue wax?

I had blue hair as a teenager but had to bleach it first, hair dye has probably moved on quite a bit since then though. I would go to a local hairdressrer and ask.

You will need to pre lighten it before putting the colour on.

It will need to be bleached first. Look up a tutorial - I find Brad Mondo quite fun whilst informative!

Can they have it blue at school? Unless you already have light blonde hair you end up with a sludgy green look, but if you lighten it first then the hair will show the colour better and also hold onto it, so it won’t just be a wash out job.

Could you compromise by doing the ends as a dip dye effect so that when they get bored of it, or if it looks bad, you can trim it off and keep the rest of the hair natural.

Could always add more blue next time if they like it but at least you haven’t totally ruined good hair if they don’t.

I'd decide what level of upkeep you're happy with first, if it's bleached and an all over colour applied it'll fade and grow out fairly quickly. If they fancied lower maintenance then bleaching the bottom half and dying it blue like this would look fab and hide the roots issue well - it'd just need topping up with colour when it fades! It's what I did to my sisters when she had her first foray into coloured hair, was comparatively low maintenance.

@SteveHarringtonsChestHair - at college, so his hair colour not an issue. His hair is fairly short so can't opt for the dip dye look.
