First time taking the dc's to the pop up xmas rink.. DH & I can't go with them due to bad knees & hips! Please give me some tips & reassurance. Very nervous 😩 It will be their first time.

Have you booked skate aids for them? It will be fine, they are normally pretty small and you can all just hang onto the side while you get used to it.

Not much advice but if they fall be sure to tell them to either pull their hands up quickly or at least tuck their fingers in.

They have these polar bear things like walking frames, I'm going to ring the rink tomorrow as there wasn't an option to prebook online.. Dh & I will be watching from behind the boards, bad knees & hips!

They'll be fine, please don't worry. I went as a child, I took my kids from toddlers and they were fine. Thick socks help with the boots and take gloves

RiverSkater · 22/11/2022 00:04

They do know they won't be out there immediately like Torvill and Dean?

My two found it very frustrating so you need to warn them it takes patience and perseverance!

Hot chocolate with trimmings as reward!

Snowqueen22 · 22/11/2022 00:06

@RiverSkater yep, they're usually quite cautious at the best of times! I'm just afraid of injury!

@gogohmm I feel bad not going on the ice with them but dh & I really have had our share of joint problems.. We are both former runners & paying for it now!

DDs school (well, just DD2 now) gets a pop up rink every December. Every class uses it from the 3yos to the 11yos... then after school siblings and any brave patents can try. They have a great time.

Lots of layers, hat, gloves, thick socks for the skates and definitely a hot chocolate afterwards to get warm again.

They'll be fine.

FlounderingFruitcake · 22/11/2022 09:57

Have they ever roller skated before? It’s the same motion so if they can do that it’ll probably come naturally.

Not sure about the suggestion of the penguin skate aids… I don’t think I’ve ever seen an over 5 using them so wouldn’t they have to stoop to use one, and that’s if they’re not embarrassed- my niece is 10 and wouldn’t go for that at all!

Snowqueen22 · 22/11/2022 09:58

Thanks, my nerves 😩

Tell them to lean forward - most beginners topple over backwards.
the skating motion is different to walking. You glide forward and slightly out to the side. See if you can find any videos online
