Sprained both ankles

I’m so fed up. I went over on both ankles and heard loud cracks. Instant pain, felt sick, very shaky. Went to a&e and they aren’t broken but all they could do was give me two crutches. I can’t weight bear on either foot so the crutches are pretty useless. I’m having to crawl around the floor everywhere. Has anyone else done similar and when were you able to weight bear and move about? I’m so miserable. My ankles are twice the normal size and covered in bruises.

Oh poor you. How on earth did you do that?

Have you got help at home?

Ghostsapply · 21/11/2022 22:38

Make sure you ice them regularly. My DD went over on her ankle two weeks ago. It is absolutely black now but she has been mobile since she did it. What really helped was submerging it in a bucket of iced water for 1 minute and then 2 minutes in a bucket of warm water. It has has really helped manage the swelling.

I was crouched down on my top toes and my little boy jumped on me for a cuddle. Went sideways over on both of them. Thankfully I have DH who is sorting the kids out and I can work from home, it’s just so frustrating

Do you have a local wheelchair hire place?

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 21/11/2022 22:51

Ive done this. I've also sprained both (separately) lots of times so they're very weak. I fell off a step onto my shoes and went over on both. I could bear slight weight the next day but had to rest for a few days. Hope you feel better soon

CallMeBubbleDarling · 21/11/2022 22:54

I might look into a wheelchair. I’ve thought of moon boots as well. Just anything that will help me stay upright. When I try and walk my ankles click and move about and it’s agony

I twist/sprain my ankle regularly. I have no grace or poise and regularly walk while reading a book so fall over things ALOT.

I always find that a tubigrip helps, it makes the ankle feel a lot stronger and more supported.

I also cannot express enough how important it is to keep the ankle moving, small motions, nothing excessive, but while you are sat or lying down just gently rotate the ankle, point your toe then bend it back up towards your shin. If you keep the muscles completely immobile they will stiffen up and be more painful.

fruitpastille · 21/11/2022 23:26

Did they x ray you? Stupid question maybe but mine was misdiagnosed at minor injuries as a sprain when it turned out to actually be broken in 2 places.

I sprained my ankle badly 4 weeks ago - I found a walking boot really helpful. Just google 'boot for sprained ankle' - you can get them on amazon.

CallMeBubbleDarling · 22/11/2022 09:23

Thank you for the advice everyone. I have been looking at walking boots.

@fruitpastille they did xray them both, I couldn't believe it when they said they weren't broken as there such a crack when I went over

I read your title and grimaced, a bad sprain can be more painful than a break and to have done both..! 😖

Are they sure there isn't ligament damage?

You need to keep off them for several days at least, with the usual treatments for sprains, so if you can get a wheelchair that would be helpful. Also look at whether you can get a shower stool and a leaning stool for the kitchen.

Thank you. I spoke to the dr this morning who basically said the same thing and that I need patience. Not very good at that. She did say to call back after 2 weeks if it’s no better and she will refer me to the fracture clinic though

I did this on my right ankle earlier this year. The pain of it was shocking.

CallMeBubbleDarling · 22/11/2022 15:09

It’s awful isn’t it. I’ve never felt a pain like it
