Where do you keep….

  1. Bread
  2. Potatoes
  3. Fruit (oranges, bananas, apples)

Debate with MIL (don’t even ask)… 🤣

Bread shouldn't be kept in the fridge as it promotes mould growth and goes stale more quickly it's kept in a bread bin here

Potatoes should be kept in a cool dark place (not the fridge) as starch turns to sugar www.thekitchn.com/never-store-potatoes-in-fridge-263779

Fruit is kept in the fruit bowl with bananas separate as they cause other fruit to ripen more quickly

Rachell1 · 21/11/2022 19:46

Ok good, it’s in my favour so far! MIL keeps all 3 in fridge, bread being the weirdest in my opinion…. But she is adamant it lasts longer!

Fruits kept in fridge - strawberries, grapes, other soft fruits. Fruits like apples and bananas kept in a cupboard
Bread - cupboard
Potatoes- cupboard

Bread goes stale faster in the fridge. Potatoes aren't supposed to be put in the fridge - something to do with starches turning to sugars in them

Justyouwaitandseeagain · 21/11/2022 19:50

Bread - cupboard or worktop
potatoes - veg drawer
fruit - fruit bowl unless very ripe and attracting flies when I move it to the fridge

Hadalifeonce · 21/11/2022 19:51

Veg basket

As per PP berries/grapes in the fridge.

FridayNightIsWineNight · 21/11/2022 20:03

Potatoes - veg basket in utility.

stormelf · 21/11/2022 20:06

Bread in basket on pantry shelf
Potatoes in pantry cupboard
Fruit in fruit bowl on dining table

Berries, melon and grapes in the fridge though

BamBamBilla · 21/11/2022 20:09

Bread in the bread bin.
Potatoes in a canvas bag under the stairs.
Soft fruit in the fridge or in the freezer. Apples, bananas, satsumas in the fruit bowl on the table.

RampantIvy · 21/11/2022 20:12

Your MIL is wrong

orbitalcrisis · 21/11/2022 20:15

If you keep bread in the fridge it goes stale faster as it speeds up the crystallisation of the starch molecules.

All those items should NOT be kept in the fridge in a country like the UK where room temperature is around 20 degrees.

sneezums · 21/11/2022 20:19

Bread - bread bin
Potatoes - basket in cupboard
Fruit - fruit bowl but apples in fridge as prefer them cold and keep better.

Fruit in fruit bowl except berries and lemons and limes.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 21/11/2022 20:27

Bread - freezer
Potatoes - fridge drawer
Oranges/berries - fridge
Apples - bowl
Bananas - monkey's stomach.

yikesanotherbooboo · 21/11/2022 21:07

Bread in the freezer or bread bin.
Potatoes in dark cool cupboard.
Apples and oranges in the same cupboard.
If I have soft fruits ( in the summer) I keep them in the fridge if they are ripe.

Floralnomad · 21/11/2022 21:11

Is your MIL gluten free as GF bread definitely lasts longer in the fridge .

Mylakk · 21/11/2022 21:23
  1. Bread - cupboard (did try the fridge but decided cupboard best)
  2. Potatoes - fridge (just simply have the space here)
  3. Fruit - in fruit bowl (might keep some in fridge if in danger of all ripening too fast before we can eat it)
Lillysmamma · 21/11/2022 21:26

Bread - by toaster

potatoes - on worktop

fruit - fruit bowl. I only put berries, grapes etc in fridge.

PortalooSunset · 21/11/2022 21:54

Bread - cupboard/pantry (or freezer)
Spuds - veg basket, with onions (also in pantry)
Apples and bananas - fruit baskets (separate)
Oranges in the fridge
