Edinburgh at Christmas

Looking at taking my mum to Edinburgh for a couple of nights for spot of Christmas shopping the week before Xmas and to soak up the atmosphere. Can anyone recommend an area to stay in (or indeed hotel recs and things to do!)

Ive never been before so am a complete novice but DMum has had a tough year and so I want to treat her to some luxury.

Money no object (within reason!!)

Gleneagles have just opened a hotel in Edinburgh ( George Street I think, so very central. The Balmoral is always lovely, The Glasshouse ( quite modern) or Virgin Hotels.

if money is no object - and if you can get in The Witchery is fab. it has rooms as well as a restaurant. both are lovely
The Scotsman hotel is quite nice - and more reasonably priced, but still has a bit of character

2nd the witchery, it's truly stunning and the level of hospitality is beyond anything I was expecting

There’s a lovely little market in the grass market on Saturdays. Not as crowded as the christmas markets. Are you looking for hotel or air bnb. I like the indep shops on streets off the Royal Mile but lots of high street choice off Princes street area

The Dome is lovely at Christmas if you can get a table

Chemenger · 21/11/2022 19:27

It’s a bit out of the town centre but Prestonfield is fabulous. It’s lovely for afternoon tea as well.

Go to the Dome for cocktails, but avoid the afternoon tea it’s pretty rubbish, but the dome is so beautifully decorated inside, you need to go early as soon as it’s dark because it gets busy which means queuing in the cold.
The best afternoon tea is the signet library or Waldorf Astoria Or take a taxi to Prestonfield hotel, it’s not far away just not city centre it’s really gorgeous there for a meal or afternoon tea treat.

If she likes a tipple, the Johnnie Walker experience is fabulous

If money is no object please stay at The Balmoral, it is lovely, we had our wedding reception there in 2000 and stayed again at Easter 2002. Great food, lovely rooms and a wonderful spa.
Go to the Scottish Whisky exhibition, visit the castle and see the beautiful Scottish Crown Jewels.
Definitely visit Valvona and Crolla.
Also the Britannia is moored at Leith, worth a visit.
