Hot Chocolate with Water

Hi all,

As part of a gift we would like to get some hot chocolate but due to finial reasons, it would be best to get her one that can be mixed with water so she can use it without it costing her a lot more.

Can anyone recommend any ones you really like?

She’s more a milk chocolate/Cadbury’s fiend rather than wanting anything too dark.

Another vote for Clipper instant hot chocolate. It’s in our Aldi at the moment so I am stocking up. Options is a diet product. Not sure if the person you are buying for would mind that? Seems miserable for a present unless you know the person is trying to lose weight.

Is options a diet product? I've been buying it for years and never knew this.

The only pre-mixed supermarket one that tastes remotely nice (to me) with just water is the ovaltine hot chocolate, which is designed to be made with water and I think has a really nice taste that doesn't need added sugar.

Without wishing to be contrary, if 'financial reasons' extends to not being able to afford a pint of milk to use across the week in the drink then is boiling the kettle each time for a hot drink is also likely to pose an issue? I think I would be quite concerned if a loved one was not able to afford even milk for their hot drink and was actively not buying it due to a financial burden.

You can buy sachets/pots of long life milk in bulk if that would reduce the burden, then she could just add one or two each time. Lots of choice on amazon including an oat milk one, or they do them in places like B&M ( where the hot chocolate is also much cheaper).

Hot chocolate with milk would be more than a pint a week. She has milk with tea but we would not want to add to her outgoings with a present. Actively not buying milk is an odd way to look at an expense you don’t already have.

I don’t think the water ones are so dramatically bad that she has to have the milk ones. She doesn’t have the space for any bulk buying nor would she likely want that sitting around.

I hope this is more understandable to you. Happy to explain things in more detail. If you know anyone the cost of living is having a big impact on then you’ll probably already understand from that POV.

Galaxy hot chocolate is huge nice made with water.

or could you add some powdered milk/creamer as part of the gift to make it a bit richer without having to have fresh milk?

I second this. I hate hot chocolate with water but I tried this and it was good!

Options is made with a mix of sugar and artificial sweetener to lower the calories. It was pushed hard at Slimming World when I attended.

Mogloveseggs · 21/11/2022 20:12

The galaxy is delicious.
I like the ovaltine one but as a pp said it's not as chocolaty but tastes very like maltesers to me.

Clarice99 · 21/11/2022 20:12

Another vote for Clipper.

Never knew this! I just bought it because I like the taste and love the white chocolate one!

I think Options tastes of artificial sweeteners, would rather go without, but we all like different things. It is heavily marketed in SW and WW, or used to be. I would cry if some gave me Options. I’d take it as I hint I need to lose weight.

Well I'm glad I know this now. Thank you!

I think it’s between Galaxy and Clipper. My only worry with Clipper is that it might be too cocoa for her. She has a sweet tooth rather than being drawn to richer chocolate. I will see what DH thinks she might like best.

Thanks all so much for the suggestions!

Galaxy is very nice and goes a little frothy. I'm drinking it right now. Tesco has it on offer for £2 with a clubcard at the moment.

imnottoofussed · 21/11/2022 20:45

I personally prefer the galaxy frothy one over the normal galaxy one

KylieCharlene · 21/11/2022 20:47

Cadburys Instant. Definitely.
Judging by the love for Galaxy I must be the only one who finds lumps in mine.

peridito · 21/11/2022 20:48

I second the idea of including a tub of Coffemate/creamer .It's huge nice in hot choc made with water .

Talipesmum · 21/11/2022 20:52

If we make it with water (eg when camping) it makes a big difference if we just add a bit of milk like you’d do in a cup of tea - makes it a better temp for drinking as well. But agree the galaxy frothy one is my kids choice for milkless hot choc. Or a scoop of powdered milk too.
