On the London overground yesterday and a couple boarded with their beautiful dog. Instructed pet to sit in the chair next to one of them, Is this a thing?

It’s quite normal. It doesn’t really bother me - I don’t think they are any dirtier than the rest of us are, and there isn’t an allergy issue as they are on the train anyway, brushing against the soft furnishings.

I’d expect the dog to be taken off the seat to give way to a person. That’s about it.

If it is, it shouldn’t be because it is unhygienic. He should have been made to sit on the floor.

GooseberryCinnamonYogurt · 20/11/2022 19:42

Dogs should definitely be on the floor. End of!

That's not normal. And it's not on.

No dogs, no shoes on seats. No bags either. Seats are for people to sit on.

HuntingHappiness · 20/11/2022 19:45

Only a thing for the worst type of dog owners, the ones who are total twats.

The type that let their dog jump all over you and say “oh, Derek wants to say hello, he likes you” and expect you to want to pet their stinking, slobbering hound that they haven’t bothered to train.

Having used the tube in London for 40 years, no, not the accepted thing. I have rarely, if ever, seen this. Small dogs on people’s laps, yes, otherwise they sit in the floor.

I don’t put my feet or naked I wiped arse on the seats. Or in fact my body that I have licked all over with my saliva.

BlackberrySky · 20/11/2022 19:59

No, that is thankfully not a thing.
The only dogs I have seen on seats are tiny ones that are in one of those dog carrying bags, so they aren't actually touching the seat itself.

BobbyBobbyBobby · 20/11/2022 20:07

Depends on how big the dog is as to whether I would ask him/her to give up their seat

I was just taken aback that the owner was so brazen, and it felt as if they knew it's quite something and looking for a reaction from other passengers. I did really want to say something but being the train and London didn't know what type of response I would get.

It's disgusting. I was stunned to see a Dalmatian sit at a table in costa a while back. Not sure what bothered me the most, the audacity of its owners or the staff for not telling them to get the dog off the seat.

SpookySally · 20/11/2022 20:53

@BobbyBobbyBobby hahah that’s brilliant, I wouldn’t mind because he’s sitting so nicely!

I see dogs on seats now and again, am not overly bothered but I wouldn’t let mine do it. He sits on the floor unless it’s super busy then he goes on my lap so he doesn’t get stood on.

Clymene · 20/11/2022 21:04

Mine sits on my lap or on the floor

AndAllOurYesterdays · 20/11/2022 21:10

I was on a tube once when a guy sat down opposite with a very small, cute puppy. One of those with a jeweled collar and matching coat. He placed it on the seat next to him. Everyone was looking at it as it was so adorable. And then it wee'd on the seat. And he picked it up and got straight off at the next stop, didn't even try to clean it up.

The mental image of this is amazing 😂😂

Took my dog in London overground yesterday. Train was quiet and he immediately jumped on seat opposite me. He was immediately told to get off (he’s a cheeky bugger) and he didn’t get up again. He was allowed to sit on my knee however when he wanted to look out of window (I think that’s acceptable?)

Dogs should not be on the seat on public transport.

HarvestThyme · 20/11/2022 21:26

If the dog is small enough to fit on the owner's lap, fine. But not on the seat. Never.

WeAllHaveWings · 20/11/2022 21:38

No human or animal should be sitting on public seating without pants on.
