Anyone good at maths?

My DD has been given this homework and we are stumped! It’s using four fours (4,4,4,4) and any operations to make up the numbers 0-30. We have done some but are really stuck on others.

Which ones are you stumped on?

Remember 4/4 makes 1
and (4+4)/4 makes 2

We are stuck on 6, 10, 11, 13, 14,15 and 17-30.

4/4=1
(4+4)/4=2
4-4/4=3
4=4
4+4/4=5
4+(4+4)/2=6
4+4-4/4=7
4+4=8

4x4-(4/4)=15

This was fun! Up to 12 so far. Assume you're allowed to square and root.

0 4-4

1 4/4

2 (4+4)/4

3 (4+4+4)/4

4 (4^2)/4

5 (4/4)+4

6 (4+4)/4 +4

7 (4/4)+4 + sqrt4

8 (4^2)-4-4

9 (4+4)+(4/4)

10 4+4+sqrt4

11 (4^2) -4 -(4/4)

12 (4^2)-4

Do you have to use four 4s or just a maximum of four?

1 = 4/4
2 = (4+4)/4
3 = (4+4+4)/4
etc
etc

I'd assume square and square root were banned due to the 2

How about 44/4=11?

It's really useful to know that 4! means 432*1 = 24

So:
20 = 4! - (4+4)/sqrt(4)

21 = 4! - sqrt(4) - 4/4

22 = 4! - (4+4)/4

Dear God. I have two of my grandchildren everyday after school and we do their homework together. I’ll never be able to help them with that kind of Maths. They are currently in grades 3 and 1. Just how long do I have before I have to run away from home and live as a hermit….

4! = 4x3x2x1 = 24.

Hopefully that makes more sense.....

as a maths teacher I would point out that you aren't expected to find all the solutions, but to try and solve a problem. obviously you could google it/ask mumsnet but you aren't really getting anything out of that.

OP you’re probably not meant to get them all.

As a TA in maths lessons, I would say that if this homework is too good it will be 100% obviously to the teacher that your child didn’t do it themselves!

(This is the kind of homework that would have had my DDs in tears and stressed to the limit.)

I have no idea what this stuff means. DD10's homework spins me out enough

I’m 64 and it’s got me feeling the same way. It’s gone right over my head and I feel so frustrated. Nothing I do can get Teendivides equation to equal 28. Honestly. It’s the most awful bloody feeling.

(4+4)x4-4=28

The rule for order of operations in maths is BODMAS (or BIDMAS) BODMAS=Brackets, order/indices, Divide&Multiply, Add&Subtract

From previous threads about 50% of MNetters forget about this rule when they leave school.

(4+4)=8
8x4=32
32-4=28

That looks like cheating!
